Urolift vs TURP: Results of Randomized Controlled Trial After 1 Year

Urolift vs TURPInformation on this page is based on the results of a randomized controlled study of men with an enlarged prostate who were randomly assigned to undergo TUPR or Urolift procedure. They were evaluated after one year and results published in the medical literature.

How Does Urolift Compare To Transurethral Resection Of Prostate?

Both Urolift and TURP or transurethral resection of prostate procedures designed to improve urinary function in men.  The goal of Urolift 10 TURP East to improve his urinary flow, decreased urinary frequency and urgency and decreased the need to urinate at night.

Local Anesthesia In The Office Versus General Anesthesia In The Operating Room.

Urolift can be performed in the doctor’s office under local anesthesia.  Local anesthesia means that the urethra and the prostate are anesthetized, but the patient is fully awake and experiences minimal discomfort or pain during the procedure.  TURP procedure requires general or spinal anesthesia and is usually performed in an operating room in a hospital or surgical center.

Recovery After Treatment With Urolift And TURP.

In general recovery after the Urolift procedure is shorter than after TURP.  Most men after Urolift do not require a catheter or if they do usually for less than 1 day.  Most men after TURP require a catheter for a longer period of time, however, this varies tremendously based on the surgeon’s preferences as well as the patient’s anatomy.

Most men after Urolift are back to baseline functioning within 1-2 weeks.  Recovery after cure TURP is usually more prolonged, taking up to 6 weeks, usually involving urinary frequency, burning during urination.

Comparison Of Urinary Function After Urolift And TURP.

Both Urolift and TURP lead to significant improvement in urinary function.  In general, the urinary function is improved to a significantly high degree after the TURP procedure than after Urolift.

The urine stream is improved by more than 100% after TURP while it improves only by about 30% after Urolift.

Post-void residual, the residual urine in the bladder after urination is not significantly changed after Urolift, but it is significantly decreased by close to 70% after the TURP procedure.  A decrease in post-void residual urine is a significant benefit of Urolift which leads to less frequent urination and a greater ability of the bladder to store urine.

Sexual Function after Urolift and TURP

One year after treatment most men experience no significant change in erections after either TURP or Urolift procedure.

In terms of ejaculation dysfunction, patients who undergo Urolift procedure experience a small improvement in ejaculatory function.  In comparison, men who undergo TURP on average experience worsening of ejaculatory function.
