Dr. Alex Shteynshlyuger is a board-certified urologist in NYC.   He has performed hundreds of adult circumcision, circumcision revision, and frenulectomy procedures. He performs circumcision both as elective or cosmetic surgery as well as for treatment of severe phimosis and pain during sex. 

Insurance Coverage for Circumcision

Circumcision is often covered by medical insurance in particular if performed for a medically necessary reason such as phimosis.  We do not accept insurances including Blue Cross plans for circumcision.  Same-day circumcision is convenient for many men traveling from outside New York City.

A part or the full cost of circumcision may be covered by commercial insurance plans after deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments if circumcision is performed for a medically necessary reason and if you have out-of-network benefits.

An initial consultation is required ($285) prior to any procedure. The cost of circumcision and frenulectomy includes 3 post-procedure follow up visits (which alone are valued at $555).

Additional costs that may be incurred by some patients: laboratory tests and pathology test costs if necessary.

All procedures come with no-extra-cost in-office follow up care for 90 days. If there are any medical complications they will be addressed at no additional surgeon costs in the office settings. (Aesthetic dissatisfaction is not covered; hospital, surgical center, and anesthesia costs; outside diagnostic test costs if necessary are not covered).

When does Insurance Pay for Circumcision?

Insurances pay for circumcision when there is a medical need. In other words, when the foreskin is causing a problem. Examples include:

The cost of circumcision depends on whether it is performed under local anesthesia in the office settings or in the hospital with anesthesia.  The cost is higher if performed in the hospital or ambulatory surgery center.  Typically, circumcision in children older than 2 months requires anesthesia and cannot be performed under local anesthesia. Revision circumcision costs a little more as it often requires more time and skill to perform.

Your Choice: Circumcision in Our Office, Hospital or a Surgery Center.

From the perspective of safety and pain control, there is no difference whether we perform circumcision in our office, hospital, or surgical center.

Typically the cost of circumcision is least when performed in a sterile room in the office settings. It is more expensive by $1,000-$3,000 in the outpatient surgery center and can cost anywhere from $2,000-$5,000 more if performed in the hospital.

Circumcision under local anesthesia is the least expensive as it can be performed in the office setting which avoids the charges associated with surgical centers and hospitals. It also avoids the cost of anesthesia and the anesthesiologist who provides it.  There is no advantage of having circumcision in a hospital or a surgical center.  We perform circumcision in our office under sterile conditions, with a lower risk of infection than at a hospital.
