Why Does Penile Curvature Occur?
There are a number of reasons for penile curvature after circumcision. Some reasons are related to circumcision and other reasons may be incidental.
The most common reasons for penile curvature in circumcised men are congenital penile curvature, Peyronie’s disease, and frenulum breve.
Removal of disproportionately more foreskin on one side of the penis than the other may cause penile curvature. This is a fairly rare problem. In particular, this may occur when too much skin is removed when a ‘tight’ circumcision is performed. Occasionally, the curvature may be severe enough that it causes urinary problems with the urine stream going sideways.
The curvature may appear in an erect state or a flaccid state. Scar formation at the incision site may rarely cause curvature as well.
Most commonly, curvature after circumcision is not related to the circumcision itself but was a pre-existing problem or a result of a new problem.
Causes such as Peyronie’s disease which is typically unrelated to circumcision may also occur incidentally after circumcision and requires appropriate treatment.
Treatment of Penile Curvature after Circumcision
Treatment of penile curvature after circumcision usually requires circumcision revision. Occasionally, reconstruction of missing skin with grafts and flaps is required.
If the cause of penile curvature is not related to circumcision, appropriate treatment for that problem is implemented.
