Why Does Penile Hematoma Occur?
There are a number of reasons for penile hematoma after circumcision. Penile hematoma is more common in adult men as blood supply is greater in adults and blood vessels are bigger. Men get spontaneous erections at night which can also lead to bleeding and hematoma formation. Hematoma occurs in 2-5% of adult circumcisions.
Compressive dressing is usually used to minimize the risk of bleeding and hematoma formation after circumcision.
Treatment of Penile Penile Bleeding and Hematoma after Circumcision
Usually bleeding after circumcision is minor (a few drops) and stops on it’s own with mild compression. Occasionally bleeding may be persistent and may require re-opening circumcision incision and controlling bleeding.
When penile hematoma occurs, if it is not infected it may be managed conservatively with observation. For larger hematomas, exploration and evacuation of hematoma is usually preferable as it speeds up healing process.
If the cause of penile curvature is not related to circumcision, appropriate treatment for that problem is implemented.
