Circumcision with Shang Ring: Good Option for Many but Not for Everyone
ShangRing circumcision is a good option for many men and children who desire circumcision for aesthetic, hygienic, religious, or cosmetic reasons.
ShangRing can also be performed for most men and many children with mild to moderate phimosis or balanitis.
Some men and children with more complicated needs are best served with traditional circumcision which allows an experienced surgeon to correct complex problems.
Circumcision for Patients with Complex Medical Problems
Patients who have severe balanitis with phimosis, or balanitis xerotica obliterans with adhesions of penile skin to glans penis cannot for technical reasons undergo ShangRing circumcision. These patients usually require traditional sleeve circumcision to address their medical problems. Often, the presence of balanitis xerotica obliterans (BXO) is not known in patients with severe phimosis until phimosis is addressed. As a result, some patients who desire ShangRing circumcision may require to have a traditional circumcision done instead.
Patients with moderate to severe penoscrotal webbing are often best served by traditional sleeve circumcision with modified flap creation to prevent the worsening of penoscrotal webbing. For patients with a minimal penoscrotal web, often ShangRing circumcision can be adjusted sufficiently to allow good aesthetic outcomes.
Patients with tight frenulum of the penis, or frenulum breve, are best served either by traditional circumcision or will require frenuloplasty in addition to ShangRing circumcision. Frenuloplasty may be performed at the same time as ShangRing circumcision. ShangRing circumcision does not remove the frenulum of the penis completely in most patients. Frenuloplasty can be performed during ShangRing procedure or at a later date.
