What Preparation is Necessary Prior to ShangRing Circumcision?
There is no preparation necessary for ShangRing circumcision when is performed under local anesthesia. ShangRing circumcision is performed greater than 99% of the time under local anesthesia at New York Urology Specialists.
A patient can eat and drink normally prior to the procedure. Patients who are taking medications should take medications as prescribed. For patients who are taking blood-thinning medications such as Coumadin, specific instructions will be provided by our experienced urologist prior to the procedure. Usually, the procedure can be performed while patients are taking low-dose aspirin.
Patients with severe balanitis should have the infection of this foreskin pretreated whenever possible prior to ShangRing circumcision to minimize the risk of infection. However, sometimes infection will not go away without circumcision.

What to Expect On The Day Of Shangring Circumcision?
Typically, at New York Urology Specialists, the patient will be brought to one of our comfortable rooms, you will be asked to undress and a local anesthetic will be administered. The foreskin will be cleaned with an antiseptic solution to minimize the risk of infection.
The patient will be given prophylactic antibiotics and long-acting pain medication that works for 8-12 hours. Once the local anesthetic takes effect, which usually takes 15-30 minutes, ShangRing procedure will be performed. ShangRing procedure itself is usually done within 15-20 minutes.
After ShangRing circumcision is finished, a small dressing will be applied to the penis.
What to Expect after ShangRing Circumcision?
After ShangRing circumcision patient is able to eat and drink normally. The patient can urinate normally but sometimes the urine stream splits during the first week.
Patients can take shower the same or the next day after ShangRing circumcision. The dressing should be removed prior to showering and reapplied after showering. A dressing will be provided to the patient. The patient should use regular soap and water for cleaning the area. No special precautions are unnecessary and we do not advise using anything other than regular soap and water.
The patient can return to the GYM in 1-3 days, once he is comfortable. The patient should avoid anything that involves the penis or the scrotum for the first 2-3 weeks, such as biking but can go back to jogging and other activities as tolerated.
The patient may drink alcohol in moderate amounts. The patient typically returns to the office in 7-14 days for ShangRing removal. For patients who are traveling, ShangRing usually will come off within 2-3 weeks on its own.
