What are Renal Cysts?

Kidney CystsKidney cysts are fluid-filled collections that occur within the kidneys.  Kidney cysts come in two varieties: (1) Simple kidney cysts and (2) complex renal cysts.

Simple Kidney Cysts are relatively common as men and women age, especially after age 50. It is not uncommon to find 1-2 simple cysts in each kidney after age 50.  These cysts are not dangerous, rarely cause any problems and not require to follow up.

Complex Renal Cysts are all cysts that do not satisfy the stringent criteria required of a simple cyst. Complex kidney cysts could be cancerous with a risk of cancer proportional to the level of complexity of the cyst, usually described using Bosniac classification.  These cysts require close follow up. Bosniac III and IV renal cysts usually require surgical removal as the risk of cancer vary from 50% to 85-90%.

The experienced urologists at New York Urology Specialists use the most advanced approaches to evaluating and treatment of men and women with renal cysts.
