Frequent urination at night is not a normal situation.  While the occasional need to urinate at night is normal if someone drank a lot of fluids or alcohol before going to sleep, routine need to urinate at night is usually an indicator for an underlying problem.  This is especially true if we need to urinate is not lifelong.

Causes of frequent urination at night include the following:

Hormonal problems.  Most common problem is an inadequate release of DDAVP hormone.

Medications causing the production of large volumes of urine.  Most commonly the saw antihypertensive medications, diuretics such as Lasix at a taken by men with high blood pressure and congestive heart failure.

Urinary obstruction from enlarged prostate is perhaps the most common cause of frequent urination at night in men over age 45-50.

Enlarged prostate prevents the bladder from emptying completely.  As a result remaining urine in the bladder causes the bladder to fill up quickly to capacity which leads to urgency and frequency to urinate.
