What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable medication that is used by urologists specializing in the treatment of bladder problems for treatment of urinary frequency, urgency and urinary incontinence caused by overactive bladder or neurogenic bladder.

No need to run to the bathroom.

No need to run to the bathroom.

How does Botox work?

Botox works by preventing abnormal muscle contractions in the urinary bladder.  It also works  by decreasing the abnormal sensation (urgency).

What does Botox Do? What are the benefits of Botox?

  • Botox increases the bladder capacity to store urine. In other words, Botox allows the bladder to hold more urine before you need to run to the bathroom to urinate.
  • Botox decreases the frequency of urinary urgency.
  • Botox decreases the frequency of urinary incontinence episodes

Who is a Candidate for Botox treatment?

Men and women regardless of age are good candidates for Botox treatment if they experience frequent urination, urinary incontinence caused by overactive bladder or neurogenic bladder and have not benefited or cannot tolerate oral medications such as Detrol, oxybutynin, Vesicare.  Patients with small bladder capacity can also benefit from Botox.

I Tried Multiple Different Treatments with No Benefit, can Botox help me?

Yes. Whether you could not tolerate other treatment options such as medications or neuromodulation with Interstim or tibial nerve neuromodulation due to side effects or other treatments did not work, you can still benefit from Botox as well as someone who has not tried Botox or other treatment options.

Can Botox be used in someone who is Young? Old?

Yes, the efficacy of Botox injections into detrusor muscle of the bladder for treatment of frequent urination and urinary incontinence is similar in patients who are younger and older than 65 years old.

Who is at Risk of Urinary Retention?

Patients with diabetes are at higher risk for needing CIC than other patients.

What happens if I need additional Botox injections?

A single injection of Botox tends to have effectiveness for anywhere from 6-9 months.  Botox tends to work for many years and can be reinjected safely.  In fact, the risks of UTI and retention are lower in future injections.
