Why Should Patients with Cancer Have Treatment for Ureteral Obstruction?

Many patients with various cancers (ureteral cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer, rectal cancer, lymphoma, etc) that occur within the abdomen, pelvis, or retroperitoneum can develop ureteral obstruction and hydronephrosis.  It is particularly important for patients with various cancers to have prompt treatment for ureteral obstruction

Many cancer therapies such as chemotherapy are dosed based on kidney function.  If the kidney function is impaired, only small doses of chemotherapy can be delivered.  Smaller than the optimal dose of chemotherapy is not as effective as full dose chemotherapy; at the same time, side effects of chemotherapy can be worse in patients with impaired kidney function due to ureteral obstruction than usual.

Only by maximizing kidney function in patients with malignancy who require chemotherapy can the benefit of chemotherapy be maximized.  Insertion of ureteral stents in patients with a ureteral obstruction due to malignancy can maximize kidney function and help patients fight cancer more effectively.
