Advisory consultation

Patients who plan to come to New York Urology Specialists for the Rezum or Urolift procedure are advised to schedule an Advisory Video Consultation before traveling to New York and scheduling an appointment for the procedure.  This will help you review the necessary steps to prepare for the procedure and will answer any informational questions about the Rezum procedure.

Patients From Other States and Countries Interested in the Rezum or Urolift Procedure at New York Urology Specialists

Appropriate evaluation is necessary for all patients who interested in undergoing the Rezum / Urolift procedure at New York Urology Specialists.  Patients who live far from our offices and traveling for care may choose to have an initial evaluation and testing performed by their local urologist or may come to our office in New York for a full evaluation.

For a patient to be scheduled for the Rezum / Urolift procedure the following evaluation is necessary:

Blood tests:

  • PSA test within 6 months
  • Serum creatinine within 6 months
  • Liver function tests: AST and ALT
  • CBC (hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelets)

Urine tests

  • Microscopic urinalysis and urine culture within 1 month
  • Patient with microscopic red blood cells in urine or visible blood in the urine should have appropriate evaluation including CT urogram and cystoscopy

Patients with elevated PSA need appropriate evaluation for prostate cancer which may include prostate biopsy prior to scheduling Rezum or Urolift treatment.

Procedures and Tests:

  • Cystoscopy procedure: cystoscopy procedure needs to be performed prior to scheduling the Rezum or Urolift procedure to exclude bladder cancer and other problems such as bladder stones or a large diverticulum. Rezum procedure cannot be performed for patients with untreated bladder cancer.

Options for scheduling Rezum procedure for enlarged prostate at New York Urology Specialists

We require that all patients who undergo the Rezum procedure and who live far from our office learn self-catheterization, which some patients may need to perform temporarily.  You will be taught self-catheterization before the procedure.

All patients will have a catheter at the end of the procedure which will stay for 5-14 days depending on the individual situation. A small number of men may need to do temporary self-catheterization once the catheter is removed.

It is preferable that at the very least you have PSA tests performed prior to coming to New York City. High PSA may preclude performance of the Rezum or Urolift procedure if it was not fully evaluated and you may require a prostate biopsy.

While we try to be as efficient as possible there are no guarantees about timing in terms of procedure.  You may need to stay in New York until we fully evaluate you and assure you that it is safe to do the Rezum or Urolift procedure.  The most time-efficient approach is to have a preliminary evaluation performed by your local urologist.

Option 1: Rezum Procedure only (pre-procedure evaluation by your local urologist)

Patients who had appropriate evaluation listed above by their urologist may submit a medical letter and a copy of full medical records including blood work, bladder, and prostate ultrasound along with postvoid residual and if necessary urodynamic studies prior to scheduling an appointment.

Once we review your medical records and there are no obvious contra-indications for the procedure, we will schedule Rezum procedure

Schedule:

Day 1:  You arrive at our office for initial in-person consultation; if necessary additional tests are performed (Bladder ultrasound/prostate ultrasound/cystoscopy/urodynamics). Your procedure may be performed the same day if there are no questions about your eligibility and you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Day 2 or 3: Rezum / Urolit Procedure or Follow-up after Rezum / Urolift procedure if it was performed on day 1.

Day 3 or 4: Patient may return home 1 day after the Rezum / Urolift procedure.

Days 5-14: Catheter removal: The patient will be given instructions to remove the catheter at home or by their local urologist.

Total Expected Cost for this option if no additional evaluation is necessary:

  • Advisory Consultation $585 (Video consultation and review of all medical records to be provided at least 1 week prior to the consultation)
  • Initial office consultation  $185 – $365
  • Rezum procedure – $3,600      Urolift Procedure $8,500-$10,500

Option 2: Rezum / Urolift Procedure and Full Evaluation

It is preferable that at the very least you have PSA tests performed prior to coming to New York City. High PSA may preclude performance of the Rezum or Urolift procedure if it was not fully evaluated and you may require a prostate biopsy.

While we try to be as efficient as possible there are no guarantees about timing in terms of procedure.  You may need to stay in New York until we fully evaluate you and assure you that it is safe to do the Rezum or Urolift procedure.  The most time-efficient approach is to have a preliminary evaluation performed by your local urologist.

  • Pelvic / Prostate ultrasound  $160 / $265
  • Prostate biopsy  $950
  • Urodynamic testing $850
  • Blood and urine tests – varies ($200-$400 are typical)

Rezum procedure – $3,600    Urolift Procedure $8,500-$10,500

Day 1-2:  You arrive at our office for initial in-person consultation; if necessary additional tests may be performed the same or the next day (Bladder ultrasound/prostate ultrasound/cystoscopy/urodynamics).  Blood and urine tests will be performed if necessary

Day 2 or 3: Rezum Procedure if tests indicate that no additional testing or treatment is necessary.  The patient is seen 1 day after the Rezum procedure and may return home the day after.

Day 3-10: If additional tests are necessary (PSA, prostate MRI, treatment of infection, prostate biopsy), these will be performed. Once completed, if there are no contraindications, the Rezum procedure is performed.

Days 5-14: Catheter removal: The patient will be given instructions to remove the catheter at home or by their local urologist.

For the convenience of patients traveling from outside of the New York City area (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut), we offer the option of having an initial consultation with the procedure performed the same day as the consultation.  While we advise patients to stay in the area for a few days after the procedure for a follow-up visit, we understand that it may not be possible for all patients.  Our doctors are available by phone and/or online to follow up with any questions after the procedure.
