What To Expect from Microwave Therapy for Enlarged Prostate and BPH: Effectiveness and Success Rates
by Dr. Alex Shteynshlyuger, a board-certified urologist and specialist in the treatment of enlarged prostate and complex urinary problems using minimally invasive approaches. He is one of the first urologists in the US and NYC to offer Urolift as a treatment for enlarged prostate.
How Effective is Prostate Microwave Treatment for Symptoms of BPH Such as Frequent Urination, Slow Urine Stream and Waking Up at Night?
Prostate microwave treatment has been studied for many years. Studies show that while prostate microwave therapy is statistically superior compared to placebo, the benefit is marginal for most patients. In other words, few patients experience a dramatic improvement in symptoms after microwave therapy for enlarged prostate. Clinical experience has shown that the benefit of microwave therapy is typically not dramatic and there is a high retreatment rate. Many patients who undergo prostate microwave therapy require another treatment for enlarged prostate within 3 years after microwave therapy.
As new and more effective alternatives to microwave therapy have appeared in the past 5 years, the popularity of prostate microwave therapy has declined. At New York Urology Specialists we have not performed prostate microwave therapy since 2013.
More effective treatment options such as Urolift procedure for enlarged prostate and Rezum for BPH have replaced microwave therapy in the modern treatment approach. For patients with very large prostate, laser enucleation of the prostate can be safely and effectively performed.
How Does Microwave Therapy for Large Prostate Compare to Other New Treatments for BPH?
Microwave therapy has been around for more than 20 years. Because clinical experience has shown it not to be very effective for many patients, more recent studies have not compared microwave therapy directly to newer therapies such as laser enucleation of the prostate, Urolift for BPH, or the Rezum procedure.
Based on clinical experience at New York Urology Specialists and indirect comparison, microwave therapy appears to be less effective than Rezum for BPH, Urolift procedure, laser prostate enucleation and MOSES HoLEP procedure (holmium laser enucleation of the prostate)
What Options are Available if Prostate Microwave Does not Work?
For patients who underwent prostate microwave procedure and did not experience a significant benefit in terms of improvement in the urine stream, waking up at night, urinary frequency and urgency, a number of options are available.
Moses HoLEP procedure (holmium laser ablation of prostate) is effective for men with prostate is greater than 60-80 g with severe obstruction and severe urinary symptoms.
Urolift procedure for enlarged prostate is a good option for patients who have mostly lateral lobe hypertrophy and small to medium median lobe obstruction.
Rezum procedure can be effective for men with lateral lobe and median lobe prostatic enlargement.
Preferred Treatment Options for Enlarged Prostate at New York Urology Specialists
At New York Urology Specialists our approach is to offer the most effective treatment options available to date for treatment of enlarged prostate in men.
Currently, the preferred treatment options for an enlarged prostate include Urolift procedure, Rezum procedure, and laser enucleation of the prostate (often performed using MOSES Holmium technology).
Urolift procedure can be performed in the office under local anesthesia and offers fast relief of symptoms. Rezum procedure can also be performed in the office under local anesthesia and can be used essentially on any prostate anatomy. Improvement after Rezum therapy takes a bit longer 3-6 months to appear.
Laser enucleation of prostate offers the greatest improvement in symptoms. It is typically performed in a surgical center or a hospital. Most patients go home the same or the next day.
New York Urology Specialists works with many insurance companies nationwide to obtain insurance coverage for patients who desire Urolift Procedure for BPH.
