What is Laser Enucleation of Prostate?

Laser Enucleation prostateLaser enucleation of the prostate refers to the removal of the obstructing component of the prostate that causes the symptoms of BPH.  This is in contrast to the laser ablation of the prostate, which essentially evaporated prostate tissue.  While the results are similar for smaller prostates as far as urinary function is concerned, there is a significant advantage from prostate enucleation for prostate glands greater than 80 grams.

In addition, a specimen that could be evaluated by a pathologist is produced by laser enucleation of the prostate but not when the prostate gland is evaporated.  Other procedures such as bipolar TURP also generate prostatic tissue that can be evaluated by a pathologist.

Experienced urologists are able to achieve excellent results with laser enucleation of the prostate, especially for large prostate glands.  For smaller prostates, prostate enucleation, laser ablation of prostate or TURP produces adequate results.

What are the Advantages of Laser Enucleation?

Laser enucleation of the prostate has an edge in the treatment of very large prostates, greater than 80-100 g, which can be more completely removed with laser enucleation of the prostate.  Laser enucleation achieves success rates equivalent to open surgery with fewer complications.

Laser enucleation allows complete resection of obstructing prostatic tissue down to prostatic capsule without the limitations of TURP procedure (length of time for resection, a risk of TURP syndrome), and with fewer complications than open suprapubic prostatectomy.

  • Shorter hospital stay than TURP or open prostatectomy
  • Shorter duration of catheterization.
  • Removed prostatic tissue can be used for pathological examination.
  • Less need for repeat procedures compared to HoLAP or TURP.
