HoLAP vs HoLEP<\/h2>\n

What is HoLAP Procedure for Enlarged Prostate?<\/h3>\n

\"\"HoLAP<\/a> <\/strong>stands for the Holmium laser ablation<\/strong> of the prostate.  This procedure is performed under anesthesia. Holmium laser is used to evaporate prostate tissue that blocks urine flow.  It is an effective treatment option for enlarged prostate.<\/strong> Similar procedures include Greenlight PVP<\/a>,<\/strong> which stands for photo-vaporization of the prostate. The prostate tissue on the surface is lasered until it evaporates layer-by-layer.  Both HoLAP and Greenlight PVP laser are effective in treating symptoms of BPH.<\/p>\n

Because tissue is evaporated, there is no tissue for the pathologist to look at at the end of the procedure.<\/p>\n

What is HOLEP Procedure for Enlarged Prostate?<\/h2>\n

HoLEP<\/a><\/strong> stands for Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate. The difference between HOLAP and HoLEP is that with HoLEP, the tissue is ‘enucleated,<\/strong>” and with HoLAP, the tissue is ablated (evaporated<\/strong>). Holmium laser<\/a><\/strong> is used for both procedures.  Similarly, other lasers can be used to ablate or enucleate prostate tissue, for example, Greenlight laser, ProTouch Laser<\/a><\/strong>, Thulium laser<\/a><\/strong>, and Evolve laser<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In HoLAP \u201cablation\u201d procedure<\/strong>, the tissue is ablated or evaporated.  No prostate tissue is available to be removed for evaluation by a pathologist.<\/p>\n

In the HoLEP \u201cenucleation\u201d procedure<\/strong>, the tissue is removed and can be evaluated by a pathologist.  About 5-10% of men are found to have prostate cancer<\/a> in the tissue.  Most of the cancers are low risk. Typically patients with a higher preoperative chance of having prostate cancer (high PSA, family history, etc.) are advised HoLEP or TURP procedure<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

HoLEP procedure allows the treatment of larger sized prostates with less need for reoperation.<\/strong>  Because the HoLEP procedure is less dependent on prostate size, very large prostates<\/a> can be treated with the HoLEP procedure.<\/p>\n

Which is Safer HoLEP or HoLAP Procedure?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Both HoLEP and HoLAP procedures are equally safe. The HoLEP procedure requires greater experience and training to perform, and only a few urologists perform this procedure.  On the other hand, the ablation (HoLAP) procedure requires less training, and many urologists are experienced in performing it.<\/p>\n
