What are the Causes of Slow Urination in Men with Enlarged Prostate?<\/h2>\n

 Slow urine stream in men is most commonly caused by BPH related prostate growth.  The prostate surrounds the urethra through which the urine flows.  Recall this part of the urethra and the prostatic urethra.  As a prostate growth, the narrowing of the prostatic urethra causes a blockage to urine flow.  As the prostate grows, progressively slow urine flow slowly develops over a period of years.<\/p>\n

Other causes of slow urine flow in males include urethral stricture which is a narrowing of the urethra from scar tissue. Scar formation in the urethra can result from injury, inflammation or infection.<\/p>\n

Poor functioning of the bladder detrusor muscle is another cause of weak urine stream in men.  Most often weak bladder muscle occurs in patients with diabetes and other neurological problems such as multiple sclerosis. <\/p>\n

Weak pee stream can be caused by a combination of an enlarged prostate that blocks urine flow and poorly functional bladder muscle that cannot push adequately against enlarged prostate to empty the bladder.  Commonly men with a slow urine stream also experienced frequent urination and urine dribbling after they urinate.  The bladder does not empty adequately, discomfort in the pelvis and lower abdomen can occur which typically gets better after urination.<\/p>\n

Treatment Options for Slow Urine Stream and Weak Flow for Men with BPH<\/h2>\n

 Weak urine flow and constant urge to urinate a common and man with an enlarged prostate caused by BPH.  The problems caused by weak urine flow and a constant urge to urinate can be effectively treated with medications such as tamsulosin and finasteride.  His symptoms are more severe, enlarged prostate surgery such as prostate enucleation, Greenlight laser, bipolar TURP procedure and prostate laser surgery such as ProTouch laser enucleation of the prostate can be performed.  For patients who desire less invasive therapies, Urolift procedure and Rezum procedures are good options that can be performed under local anesthesia in under 30 minutes.  <\/p>\n

Slow Pee Flow at Night or in the Morning?<\/h2>\n

A common symptom of enlarged prostate in men is a weak urine flow early in the morning.  Men often have hesitancy in the morning but report good urine stream during the day.  This is a typical symptom of an enlarged prostate.  Depending on the patient’s symptoms as well as postvoid residual volume in the bladder some men may require treatment.  Other men who do not have many symptoms may choose observation with re-evaluation in 6 months to a year.<\/p>\n
