Recovery After Prostate Enucleation with Laser: What You Need to Know<\/h2>\n

These notes are applicable to patients who undergo prostate surgery at New York Urology Specialists. Consult your surgeon if your surgery is done elsewhere.<\/u><\/p>\n

\"\"Recovery after laser enucleation of the prostate<\/strong> is typically relatively uneventful for most patients.  It is important to understand that while laser enucleation of the prostate can be done with various lasers, the recovery process is the same, whether the procedure is done with Holmium laser (HoLEP)<\/a>, Greenlight laser (GreenLEP)<\/a>, Thulium laser (ThuLEP)<\/a>, ProTouch laser, or Evolve laser.<\/p>\n

When is it Safe to Go to Work and to Exercise after Prostate Enucleation?<\/h2>\n

Men may return to office work<\/strong> within a few days after laser enucleation of the prostate or once they feel comfortable.  If you have a catheter and are comfortable working with it, you may return to work with the catheter.<\/p>\n

Men may go to the gym<\/strong> 2 weeks after prostate enucleation.  It is advisable not to engage in strenuous running such as marathon running or biking in the first 3-4 weeks after the procedure.  If you have a catheter<\/strong>, wait until the catheter is removed before returning to the GYM.<\/p>\n

When is it Safe to Travel after Prostate Enucleation?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

While we prefer that patients stay around if possible for about 6-8 weeks after the procedure, it is not always possible.  In general, it is safe to travel within 2-4 weeks<\/strong> after the procedure but we recommend that patients do not travel outside the United States or to areas where access to high-quality medical care is not available in the first 6 weeks after prostate surgery of any type.<\/p>\n

While complications after prostate enucleation are not common and are usually minor, such as UTI, blood in urine, burning with urination, and urinary frequency, they are easier dealt with if we can see the patient in our office.<\/p>\n

When Can I Have Sex after Laser Enucleation of Prostate With Greenlight, Holmium, Thulium or Protouch Laser?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Men can resume sexual activity<\/strong> 1 month after catheter removal or 1 month after there is no blood in the urine. Usually, it is safe to resume sexual activity 6 weeks after surgery.<\/p>\n

How Long Can I Expect to Have Burning and Frequent Urination?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Burning with urination<\/strong> occurs after any prostate surgery. Symptoms typically improve significantly in the first 1-2 weeks and typically disappear by 6-8 weeks after surgery.  A similar timeline applies to urinary frequency and the urge to urinate.<\/p>\n

Patients with Severe Urgency and Urge Incontinence Prior to Surgery<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Many patients with severe urinary urgency and urge incontinence<\/strong> as well as urinary retention<\/a> with overflow incontinence have very high pressures in the urinary bladder during urination.  Immediately after surgery, these symptoms may persist or occasionally get worse.<\/strong>  Typically, this exacerbation of symptoms is a temporary problem caused by the urinary bladder persistently trying to push hard despite the fact that there is no longer blockage from the prostate that needs to be overcome. <\/p>\n

Typically, it takes 2-3 months for the bladder to be retrained<\/strong> to realize that it does not need to push as hard to empty urine.  After laser enucleation of the prostate, urge incontinence and stress-induced urge urinary incontinence improve and resolve within 1-3 months after the procedure. <\/p>\n

Occasionally, patients are treated with medications for overactive bladder such as Myrbetriq<\/a>, oxybutynin<\/a>, or Vesicare<\/a>.  If symptoms persist beyond 2-3 months without significant improvement, cystoscopy<\/a> and urodynamics may need to be performed and if detrusor hyperactivity is noted, Botox injections<\/a> or InterStim may be considered.<\/p>\n

Where is the Laser Enucleation Procedure Performed?<\/h2>\n

Laser enucleation procedures are performed at a Maimonides Medical Center as well as New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.  For patients with smaller prostates and good health, the procedure can be performed in our office or at the Gramercy Surgical center.<\/p>\n
