Is Urolift an Option for Men with a Urethral Foley Catheter?<\/h2>\n

Treatment Options<\/p><\/div>\n

Men with urinary retention<\/a> <\/strong>who require a catheter to empty the bladder<\/a><\/strong> present a particular challenge to the urologist.  These are the most difficult men to treat.  They also represent a spectrum of varying anatomy and severity of obstruction. The urinary tract obstruction by the prostate in men with urinary retention is typically more severe than in men who have mild-to-moderate symptoms of an enlarged prostate.<\/p>\n

A thorough individualized evaluation of each patient is necessary.  Depending on the anatomy, the severity of the obstruction, and the size of the prostate some men with urinary retention may have a reasonably good chance of benefiting from the Urolift procedure.<\/p>\n

Men who go into urinary retention after anesthesia<\/strong> often have a moderate obstruction<\/strong> that can be treated with the Urolift procedure. <\/p>\n

On the other hand, some men in urinary retention, in particular, those who developed renal (kidney) insufficiency and hydronephrosis as a result of urinary obstruction by an enlarged prostate, are usually not<\/span> good candidates for Urolift and would probably be better served with other treatment options.<\/p>\n

Reason Why Men Prefer the Urolift Procedure for the Treatment of Urinary Retention<\/h2>\n

Many men with urinary retention are concerned about sexual function and ejaculation<\/a><\/strong>.  The Urolift procedure does not affect erections or ejaculation. Similarly, the Rezum procedure<\/a><\/strong> has a very low chance of causing ejaculation problems. <\/p>\n

It is important to recognize that if a man already has erectile dysfunction<\/a> <\/strong>and requires treatment with medications<\/a><\/strong>, prostate surgery is unlikely to make it worse.  Similarly, if a man is unable to ejaculate (because of neuropathy, diabetes, enlarged prostate, or another reason), having a prostate procedure cannot make the problem worse since it is already present.<\/p>\n
