Do Men Ejaculate Normally after TURP Procedure?<\/h2>\n

\"\"Most prostate surgery procedures to remove obstructing prostate tissue including TURP and bipolar TURP lead to lack of ejaculation or anejaculation<\/strong>, sometimes called \u2018retrograde ejaculation\u201d. Anejaculation is a very common side effect of prostate surgery affecting more than 80% of patients who undergo TURP procedure.  Anejaculation after TURP is irreversible.<\/p>\n

Other treatment options for enlarged prostate such as laser ablation with holmium laser, Greenlight laser<\/a>, <\/strong>and prostate laser enucleation<\/a> also lead to anejaculation in many men.<\/p>\n

Does Bipolar TURP Improve Ejaculation Function in Men?<\/h2>\n

There is no difference in reported frequency of ejaculation in men who undergo traditional unipolar TURP compared to those who undergo bipolar TURP for treatment of enlarged prostate and urinary retention.<\/p>\n

Can Ejaculation Function be Preserved in Men who Undergo TURP Procedure?<\/h2>\n

For men who desire to preserve ejaculatory function, an attempt at ejaculation-preserving TURP<\/a><\/strong> procedure can be made by limiting the removal of prostate tissue close to the verumontanum<\/strong>.  Studies show that in as many as 50-70% of men, ejaculation may be preserved after the TURP procedure aimed at preserving ejaculatory function. <\/p>\n

The downside of the ejaculation-preserving TURP<\/strong> procedure is that it is a partial TURP and not a complete TURP procedure. As a result, the full benefit of the TURP procedure for the treatment of urinary obstruction may not be achieved: improvement in urinary symptoms may be less than what can be achieved with complete resection of the prostate (complete TURP).<\/p>\n

For men who understand the risks that attempt at ejaculation-preserving TURP may not always be successful and that improvement in symptoms may be less than optimal, the procedure can be performed by our experienced urologists in New York Urology Specialists. <\/p>\n
