A foley catheter is a type of urethral catheter that is designed to drain the bladder over a long period of time (days to weeks). Foley catheter can be changed monthly. The other type of urethral catheter, sometimes called “Straight catheter,” is used for intermittent catheterization (temporary drainage of the bladder for a few minutes at a time).<\/p>\n There are a few different reasons why a urethral catheter is used<\/strong>. The most common reason for the use of a urethral catheter is to drain the bladder<\/strong> when there is an obstruction, such as a urethral stricture or enlarged prostate that is blocking the urine flow.<\/p>\n A urethral catheter was also used to drain the bladder when the bladder muscles or nerves do not function properly<\/strong> and failed to expel the urine from the bladder.<\/p>\n Urethral Foley catheters<\/strong> are used by urologists after bladder and prostate surgery to prevent urinary retention after surgery. Sometimes the catheters are used to facilitate the treatment of severe UTI with hematuria (blood in urine).<\/p>\n Catheters may be used in people with severe urinary incontinence<\/strong> to help keep the area dry to allow healing of skin ulcerations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Removing the urethral Foley catheter<\/strong> is usually fairly simple. Typically the catheter is held inside by a balloon at the tip of the catheter. The balloon is inflated with water through a port at the end of the catheter, where it connects to the bag.<\/p>\n Removing the catheter usually involves deflating the balloon,<\/strong> which would allow the catheter to come out. Occasionally, catheter removal can be challenging if the balloon will not deflate. In this case, additional maneuvers may be performed by the urologist to deflate the balloon and to remove the catheter.<\/p>\n There are two main reasons for catheter discomfort and pain.<\/p>\n First, the catheter may irritate the bladder<\/strong> causing bladder spasms<\/strong> and an urge to urinate<\/strong>. This can sometimes lead to incontinence with urine escaping around the catheter. It can also cause painful bladder spasms.<\/strong><\/p>\n Bladder spasms<\/strong> can be effectively treated with anticholinergic medication such as oxybutynin.<\/p>\n Foley catheters can also cause irritation and pain, typically at the tip of the penis<\/strong>. Topical anesthetic cream or ointment such as lidocaine cream can help with the pain at the tip of the penis.<\/p>\n If appropriate, using clean intermittent catheterization<\/strong> instead of an indwelling Foley catheter can help with both bladder spasms and discomfort of the tip of the penis. It can also decrease the chances of infection.<\/p>\n Many people who require a Foley catheter may have a treatable condition that can be effectively addressed, so the Foley catheter is no longer required. For example, in men with urine retention caused by an enlarged prostate, treatment of the enlarged prostate<\/a><\/strong> with medications or surgery will obviate the need for the Foley catheter.<\/p>\n Similarly, patients with nonobstructive urinary retention<\/a> may benefit from the InterStim sacral neuromodulation<\/a>.<\/p>\n For patients who require a Foley catheter, clean intermittent catheterization may be an option. Another alternative to Foley catheters is a suprapubic catheter<\/a>,<\/strong> which tends to cause less discomfort, is associated with fewer risks of UTI, and maybe more comfortable for the patient.<\/p>\n Urolift procedure is covered by many insurances<\/a><\/strong>.
