Medications for Enlarged Prostate Are Effective While You Take Them<\/h2>\n

\"\"Men who are treated with medications such as alpha-blockers<\/strong> (Flomax<\/a>, Uroxatral<\/a>, Rapaflo<\/a>) or alpha-reductase inhibitors<\/strong> such as finasteride (Proscar<\/a>) or Avodart<\/a> (dutasteride) typically need to continue taking these medications as long as their symptoms are well-controlled with medications.  These medications work only as long as they are taken<\/strong>.  If these medications are stopped, the symptoms will typically recur.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Medications for an enlarged prostate<\/a><\/strong> are similar to medications for high blood pressure, which are usually taken as long as they work.  If a medication stops working, other treatment options<\/a><\/strong> will need to be discussed, which may be combination therapy with different medications or minimally invasive office procedures or surgical treatment.<\/p>\n

Alternative Treatments to Taking Medications Every Day<\/h2>\n

For patients who do not wish to take medications every day<\/strong> or who have side effects or cannot tolerate medications, in-office procedures such as Urolift <\/a>and Rezum procedure<\/a> are effective alternatives.  For men with larger prostates, laser enucleation of the prostate<\/a><\/strong>, bipolar TURP<\/a><\/strong>, or Greenlight laser<\/a> is a one-time treatment after which you should not need to take medications daily for enlarged prostate.<\/p>\n

What Types of Medications are Used for Men with Symptoms of Enlarged Prostate?<\/h2>\n

Alpha-blockers<\/strong> are the most commonly used medications for enlarged prostate. They are effective, and the benefit is often seen within days of starting the medication.  Common alpha-blocker medications include Flomax<\/a>, Uroxatral<\/a>, and Rapaflo<\/a>.  Common side effects<\/strong> of alpha-blockers include dizziness, which often disappears after a few days of taking these medications.  Men may also experience anejaculation, which is also known as retrograde ejaculation with no sperm coming out after sex.<\/p>\n

Alpha-reductase inhibitors<\/strong> are medications that block the androgen signaling and decrease the size of the prostate. The most commonly used medication is called Proscar or finasteride<\/a>.  Avodart is also often used.   Some men experience decreased sexual libido and sexual problems from these medications.<\/p>\n

PDE5-inhibitors<\/strong>, in particular, Cialis 5 mg daily<\/a> is often used for men with mild symptoms of enlarged prostate and BPH. The added benefit is that it helps with getting better erections.<\/p>\n

Combination Therapy for Enlarged Prostate<\/h2>\n

When one medication does not work sufficiently well, combination therapy<\/strong> with an alpha-blocker medication such as Flomax or Rapaflo and an alpha-reductase inhibitor such as finasteride (Proscar) are more effective together than either one alone. <\/p>\n

In addition, other medications can be used in addition to alpha-blockers and alpha-reductase inhibitors<\/strong>.  Medication for overactive bladder symptoms<\/a> such as oxybutynin<\/a>, Detrol, or Vesicare may also be helpful<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Why Medications for Enlarged Prostate May Not Help<\/h2>\n

A prostate that is too big or a large median lobe <\/a>is a common reason for medications to stop working.  When the prostate is too large, the medications may not help. Men with urethral stricture<\/a> or overactive bladder<\/a> may require a different approach to treating their urinary symptoms.<\/p>\n

For men who do not want to take medications for enlarged prostate, other treatment options available, including  Rezum water-vapor therapy<\/a> <\/strong>and the Urolift for BPH<\/a>.<\/p>\n
