Why Medications May Not Work for Enlarged Prostate?<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Treatment of Symptoms of Enlarged Prostate<\/h2>\n

\"\"For men with enlarged prostate symptoms such as a slow urinary stream<\/a><\/strong>, the need to wake up at night<\/strong>, urge to urinate, feeling of incomplete bladder emptying, and frequent urination<\/strong>, medical treatment with medications such as Flomax (Tamsulosin)<\/a>, Proscar (finasteride)<\/a>, Rapaflo<\/a>, and Avodart<\/a> is often effective.<\/p>\n

Men who are diagnosed with BPH are usually started on medical therapy empirically, based on symptoms.  Common medications used for treating enlarged prostate symptoms<\/a> include Flomax, Rapaflo, finasteride, or Avodart.  Cialis 5 mg daily<\/a> is also used, especially in men who also have erectile dysfunction<\/a>.  Significant improvement in symptoms within 1-2 weeks after initiation of therapy is expected.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some men do not experience a significant improvement in symptoms<\/strong> from the initial treatment with medications. In this situation, a search for reasons for an inadequate response to medical therapy is necessary.  Usually, evaluation involves an ultrasound of the bladder, urodynamic testing<\/a>, and cystoscopy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When medications do not produce the desired benefit or help only a little bit, other medical problems may be responsible for the urinary symptoms<\/strong>, or the patient may have a complicated and advanced case of an enlarged prostate.  Among other problems that can cause similar urinary symptoms as BPH include prostate cancer<\/a>, bladder cancer<\/a>, UTI<\/a>, kidney stones, bladder stones<\/a>, and overactive bladder<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Overactive Bladder Is a Cause of Frequent Urination in Some Men<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There is a number of possible reasons why medications for enlarged prostate do not work as well as one would expect them to work.  Some men have enlarged prostate<\/a><\/strong> and, in addition to that, have a bladder problem called overactive bladder<\/a><\/strong>.  Without separate treatment directed at the overactive bladder, treating symptoms of BPH may be insufficient.<\/p>\n

Other Causes of Persistent Symptoms When Medications for BPH May Not Work<\/h2>\n

Very large prostate, especially with a large median lobe, maybe a reason medications such as finasteride do not work.  Urethral stricture<\/a><\/strong> or narrowing from scar formation is another reason for the ineffectiveness of medications for enlarged prostate in some men.   Bladder tumors<\/strong> such as bladder cancer or bladder stones may also cause symptoms that will not be helped by medications such as tamsulosin and finasteride.<\/p>\n
