Partial circumcision can be performed either in the office under local anesthesia<\/a> with minimal pain or discomfort or in the operating room under general anesthesia.<\/p>\n In patients with phimosis <\/a>or balanitis of the foreskin<\/a> of the penis, the diseased skin with scar needs to be removed<\/strong> in order to fix the underlying problem. The minimum amount of skin that needs to be removed is the skin that has a phimotic ring in men or children with phimosis. <\/p>\n For men who have recurrent inflammation of the foreskin (balanitis)<\/a><\/strong>, the moist environment within the foreskin causes infection to recur. To prevent the recurrence of balanitis, the foreskin needs to be removed so that it does not overhang over the glans. <\/p>\n Typical symptoms of balanitis<\/strong> include inflammation over the glans of the penis and foreskin, redness, pain, and small skin lacerations. Phimosis<\/strong> <\/a>or inability to pull back foreskin is a common side effect of balanitis. When antifungal cream does not help or fungal balanitis recurs, circumcision<\/a> <\/strong>is a good treatment option.<\/p>\n There are no known benefits<\/strong> to partial circumcision compared to traditional circumcision. No studies have been performed to compare partial circumcision techniques to traditional circumcision either for patients with phimosis or balanitis or for men who seek circumcision for hygienic reasons.<\/p>\n Studies show that most men do not have any change in sensation after a traditional circumcision<\/strong>. Traditional circumcision does not affect erections or ejaculation. In my clinical experience treating many men with circumcision, few if any men who had a circumcision performed for aesthetic or hygienic reasons have complained about a change in sensation. Men who had lifelong phimosis<\/a> or recurrent balanitis typically experience significant improvement in the quality of life after a traditional circumcision.<\/p>\n Some men, for various reasons, want to retain as much skin as possible and partial circumcision can be performed upon request.<\/strong> Unless a patient has a strong preference for partial circumcision technique, we usually recommend a traditional circumcision approach or ShangRing circumcision<\/a><\/strong>, which results in similar outcomes.<\/p>\n Typically, the risks and side effects of partial circumcision<\/a> are similar to what men experience after a traditional circumcision. In addition, incomplete removal of the skin can sometimes cause irritation or swelling<\/strong> of the residual skin and may necessitate additional treatment such as revision and completion of partial circumcision<\/strong>.<\/p>\n At New York Urology Specialists, partial circumcision can be performed in the office under local anesthesia.
