Does Circumcision Change Feeling In The Penis During Sex?<\/h2>\n

\"\"Studies show<\/strong> that when circumcision is performed in adult men, most men report no change in sensation<\/strong> before and after circumcision.  Most men report similar feelings and orgasmic functions after they recover from circumcision<\/strong> and the skin heals which typically takes about 1 month.<\/p>\n

Very large studies were performed in Africa where thousands of adult men were circumcised<\/strong> in an effort to prevent the spread of HIV.  As these were sexually active adult men, they were asked after circumcision about their sensation in the penis.  Most men, >90-95%, reported no change in feeling before and after circumcision.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

About 5% of men reported a change in sensation, most minor, with half (2.5%) of them reporting increase and half (2.5%) reporting decrease in sensation.  Overall, there is no significant change in sensation after circumcision for most men.<\/strong>  For men who have pain in the penis before circumcision or hypersensitivity, circumcision typically solves the problem and leads to normal pain-free sex.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In our extensive experience at New York urology specialists we observe 4 findings:<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Most men who undergo circumcision for hygienic or aesthetic reasons<\/strong> are highly satisfied with circumcision and report no significant changes in sensation.<\/li>\n
  2. Men who undergo circumcision for phimosis<\/strong> <\/a>especially if it is lifelong, often have increased sensitivity immediately after circumcision which typically normalizes within 1-2 months after circumcision. Occasionally it may take 3-4 months for increased sensitivity to normalize but it virtually always normalizes and results in very satisfied patients.<\/li>\n
  3. Patients who had recurrent balanitis<\/strong><\/a> prior to circumcision are universally satisfied because their problem is cured<\/a><\/strong>. They typically report no change in sensation and report improved quality of life as the pain that they experienced prior to circumcision during intercourse is gone.<\/li>\n
  4. Men with underlying depression or highly negative emotions<\/strong> can sometimes regret circumcision, especially in the first few weeks as the circumcision scar is often swollen. They typically are reassured and may require to see a psychiatrist for help. They typically gain satisfaction within a few months once the incision is well healed. Sometimes treatment for underlying depression is necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
