Effective Pills for Treatment of Erection Problems in Men: Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, and Stendra Help Men Get and Keep Erections.
How Effective are Medications for Treatment of Erection Problems?
Viagra was the first medication approved for treatment for erection problems (ED) in men. Oral medications taken in pill forms such as Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis, Levitra, and Stendra are very effective for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
More than 80% of men find these medications beneficial and do not require any additional treatment. It is important to have a thorough evaluation to determine if there are any medical conditions that are causing problems with getting and keeping an erection.
What are the Differences Between Cialis (tadalafil), Viagra (sildenafil) and Levitra?
There are some differences in the duration of effectiveness, how fast the medications work and side effect profiles between Cialis, Viagra, and Levitra. Cialis stays active the longest and Levitra is very similar to Viagra. For this reason, Cialis can be taken once every 2-3 days, or a smaller dose can be taken daily (Cialis daily).
Each medication comes in different doses but the doses in milligrams are not comparable. Viagra 50 mg is not more effective than Cialis 20 mg. For many men, tadalafil 5 mg when taken daily may be more effective than sildenafil 100 mg taken before sex.
Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra are overall very similar to each other. A major difference exists between Cialis which can be taken daily at a small dose and other medications which are taken on an as-needed basis 30-60 minutes before sex. There are some benefits from taking medications daily but some downsides as well. There are also differences in prices, as Viagra is available as generic sildenafil which is cheap; Cialis is available as generic tadalafil which is also inexpensive. Stendra is still under patent but inexpensive generic is likely to be available soon.
A major benefit of having many similar medications for the treatment of ED is that often if a man experiences a side effect to one medication, let’s say sildenafil, he may be able to take Cialis without experiencing the same side effect.
What is Better Viagra or Cialis? Stendra or Viagra?
The best choice of medication for the treatment of ED is one that does not cause side effects, works well and convenient to use. Depending on sexual practices and frequency of intercourse some men prefer to take medications such as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra on an as-needed basis before having sex. Other men, who may not be able to plan well prefer to take a small dose of tadalafil (Cialis) every day regardless of whether or not they plan to have sexual intercourse.
When used appropriately and the dose is adjusted by urologists at New York Urology Specialists, all medications tend to be equally effective overall but some men respond better to one medication; and some to another. Typically this can only be determined through trial and error.
Side Effects of PDE5-Inhibitors: Cialis, Viagra, Stendra, and Levitra
All medications have side effects but not every man gets side effects when taking one of these medications. In addition, each of these medications: Viagra, Cialis (tadalafil), Levitra and Stendra (avanafil) have somewhat different side effects.
When a man develops a side effect to one of these medications he may not have the same side effect to another medication. As a result, if one medication is causing side effects, it is possible to change to another medication that may not give the patient the same side effects.
What if Medications for Erections Do Not Work?
A small minority of patients do not respond well to medications such as Viagra (sildenafil) and Cialis (tadalafil). Sometimes it may be a matter of proper use and adequate trial of medications. In general, these medications need to be tried at least 8-10 times as sometimes they may not work initially. These medications are not ‘magic pills’, they help the blood to get to the penis but you would still need to be aroused. Your partner can help you get aroused or masturbation can help.
If medications such as Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, and Stendra do not work initially to produce a satisfying erection, it may be possible to increase the dose of medications. Combination of treatment options may also be tried, for example, an oral pill may be used with intraurethral medication (MUSE).
If Viagra or Cialis do not work well, blood work may need to be performed again and blood pressure checked. If a patient is found to have low testosterone levels, testosterone replacement may be helpful.

If medications such as Viagra and Cialis do not work sufficiently well, other treatment options for ED are available which include shockwave therapy for ED, a vacuum pump, penile prosthesis, and penile injections.
What are the Common Side Effects of Medications for Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction?
Common side effects of medications such as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra (vardenafil) are headaches, upset stomach, hot flashes, muscle pain, and visual blurriness. Dangerous side effects such as priapism (an erection that lasts >4 hours) and blindness are exceedingly rare.
