TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration): What You Need to Know<\/strong><\/h1>\n

TESA (Te<\/strong>sticular S<\/strong>perm A<\/strong>spiration) is a procedure that is performed for men with infertility caused by obstructive<\/strong> azoospermia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

TESA is appropriate in situations when there are a sufficient number of sperm<\/strong> in the testis, but they cannot get out due to obstruction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The most common situation when TESA is performed is for men with a prior vasectomy<\/strong> who need sperm for IVF (In-vitro fertilization)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sperm obtained via TESA can ONLY<\/strong> be used for IVF.  It cannot<\/strong> be used for IUI (intra-uterine insemination). <\/p>\n

TESA<\/strong><\/span> (Te<\/strong>sticular S<\/strong>perm A<\/strong>spiration) should not be confused<\/strong> with similarly named procedures that are performed for different reasons, such as TESE<\/strong><\/span> (Te<\/strong>sticular S<\/strong>perm E<\/strong>xtraction) or MicroTESE (microscopic TESE). TESE is usually performed for men with non-obstructive<\/strong> azoospermia<\/a> (few sperm inside the testis).<\/p>\n

Testicular fine-needle aspiration (TEFNA)<\/strong> is a procedure similar to TESA, except it uses a smaller needle and tends to retrieve fewer<\/strong> sperm.<\/p>\n
