Is Kidney Stone and Ureteral Stone Treatment Covered by Insurance?

Kidney stone treatment is covered by health insurance in the United States because it is medically necessary. Some networks may require preauthorization for certain procedures. Imaging studies, prescription medications, blood work, and 24-hour urine collection are covered. If a procedure is needed, insurance covers all costs including anesthesia, hospital or surgical center expenses, and surgeon’s fee according to your benefit plan.  You may be responsible for deductible, co-insurance, copays depending on your insurance plan contract.

Typically insurance benefits cover the following:

  • Evaluation by a urologist (Consultation fee)
  • Blood and urine tests necessary for evaluation of patients with kidney stones
  • Surgical costs for the chosen procedure: Lithotripsy, ureteroscopy or  PCNL:
    • Anesthesia fee
    • Facility Surgical fee for Operating room in a surgical center or hospital
    • Surgeon fee
  • Imaging Costs
  • Ultrasound of Kidney and/or Pelvis
    • X-ray
    • CT Scan

If you have acute pain and you’re treated by a New York Urology Specialist doctor, most insurances cover the cost of treatment in an emergency situation.  If you’re in acute pain, see our “Emergency Treatment for Kidney Stones” page.

If you’re seen electively, the scheduling team at New York Urology Specialists will get pre-authorization from your insurance to make sure that the hospital or surgical center costs are covered.
