ESWL (Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy) has the advantage of being minimally invasive with no cutting and no instrumentation in the bladder. The stone-busting “shock-waves” are sent through the skin to break the kidney stone. <\/p>\n

Lithotripsy is usually performed under anesthesia. The lithotripter device produces and sends shock-waves through the skin and the kidney directly to the kidney or ureteral stone. The energy of the shockwave causes the stone to fragment into small pieces.<\/p>\n

Success rates of lithotripsy vary depending on patient characteristics, stone size, and stone location. Who is a Candidate for ESWL Lithotripsy?<\/h2>\n

Men and women with kidney stones, typically less than 1 cm, are good candidates for ESWL lithotripsy. Most patients with ureteral stones are candidates for ESWL, but if the stone is too deep in the pelvis, shockwave lithotripsy may not be an option.  Shockwave lithotripsy is also not performed on pregnant women due to the concerns of the fetus getting in the way of the shockwaves.<\/p>\n

What to Expect Before and After Lithotripsy of Kidney Stones?<\/h2>\n

ESWL lithotripsy is performed under IV sedation or deeper anesthesia. Patients are advised not to eat or drink after midnight. The procedure takes less than 1 hour to perform. Patients typically go home the same day.  You might experience a bit of pain\/discomfort in the area of the kidney, a small amount of blood in urine, and you may notice sand in your urine. We usually request that patients collect the “sand” that is passed in urine so that we can send it to the laboratory for biochemical analysis to help us determine stone composition.<\/p>\n
