{"id":105,"date":"2014-01-18T04:56:52","date_gmt":"2014-01-18T04:56:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newyorkurologyspecialists.com\/kidney-stones\/?p=105"},"modified":"2014-07-30T16:34:20","modified_gmt":"2014-07-30T16:34:20","slug":"new-study-shows-24-hour-urine-collection-underused-nationwide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newyorkurologyspecialists.com\/kidney-stones\/news\/kidney-stone-prevention\/new-study-shows-24-hour-urine-collection-underused-nationwide\/","title":{"rendered":"New Study Shows that 24 hour urine collection is underused nationwide"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>New Study Shows that 24 hour urine collection is underused nationwide<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.5;\">For men and women who are at high risk for repeat kidney stones, the national guidelines recommend <a title=\"24 Hour Urine Collection for Kidney Stone Formers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkurologyspecialists.com\/kidney-stones\/24-hour-urine-collection-kidney-stone-formers\/\">24-hour urine collection<\/a> as well as a metabolic evaluation to determine the risk factors for stone recurrence. \u00a0Once the risk factors are identified on <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.5;\" title=\"24 Hour Urine Collection for Kidney Stone Formers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkurologyspecialists.com\/kidney-stones\/24-hour-urine-collection-kidney-stone-formers\/\">24-hour urine collection<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.5;\"> or metabolic evaluation, a \u00a0specific treatment can be instituted to prevent or minimize the chances of kidney stone recurrence.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.5;\">At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkurologyspecialists.com\/about\/\">New York Urologists Specialists<\/a> greater than 95% of our\u00a0patients\u00a0who are at high risk for kidney stone recurrence get\u00a0a full evaluation with 24-hour urine collection and metabolic evaluation. <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.5;\"><strong>We are pleased with our success in preventing kidney stone recurrence among our patients with frequent kidney stones.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.5;\">A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24018242\">new study <\/a>reports that nationwide most men and women at high risk for kidney stone recurrence do not get the recommended evaluation with a 24-hour urine collection. \u00a0In fact, the study reports that less than 8% of men and women who should have had 24-hour urine collection actually obtained it. \u00a0The chances are somewhat higher when the patient&#8217;s were seen by a nephrologist or urologist but still exceedingly low, well under 30% overall. \u00a0In comparison, <strong>over 90% of patients at <a title=\"About Us\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkurologyspecialists.com\/kidney-stones\/about\/\">New York Urology Specialists<\/a> who require it are recommended a full evaluation<\/strong> that includes 24-hour collection and metabolic evaluation that includes PTH, serum calcium and serum uric acid levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Prevention is Key to Patients at High Risk for Kidney Stone Recurrence<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.5;\">Recurrent kidney stones are associated with a number of significant problems.
