Some men experience occasional discomfort in the testicle that lasts a few seconds and goes away. Other men experience severe pain in 1 or both testes it may persist for many hours or days at a time.<\/p>\n There are many causes of testicular pain<\/a> in men. Most common causes are related to infection such as orchitis<\/a> or epididymitis but it also may be caused by a pulled muscle in the groin, an irritated or impinged nerve in the back<\/strong>, or a kidney stone<\/a>.<\/p>\n There are several reasons why a testicle may not be palpable or is missing. Occasionally the testicle is undescended<\/strong> and is located higher in the groin or in the abdomen. The testicle may also be retractile,<\/strong> which means that it springs up into the groin but can be pulled down to the scrotum during an examination or when the body is relaxed.<\/p>\n Some men were born without a testicle or have lost it due to testicular torsion<\/strong>. Occasionally the testicle is loose due to an infection or trauma. Surgical removal of testicles due to testicular cancer is another reason for missing testicles in men.<\/p>\n Most men with one testicle have normal testosterone levels and able to get the partner pregnant and have children. <\/p>\n As men age, some men develop age-related testosterone deficiency or low testosterone levels<\/a><\/strong>. Men with 1 testicle may be at a higher risk of developing low testosterone levels. <\/p>\n Some men are self-conscious<\/strong> about having one testicle and do not have the confidence to engage in sexual relations because of that. Testicular implants<\/a><\/strong> are an effective and successful option to recreate the normal anatomy of the scrotum.<\/p>\n Normally, the right and left testes are not identical in size, and one may sit lower than the other. It is fairly normal for one testicle to look slightly smaller than the other.<\/p>\n In some situations, one testicle may not develop normally and may feel smaller than the other. Scrotal varicocele<\/a><\/strong> is one reason a testis may not grow at a normal rate in teenagers and adolescent boys. Scrotal varicocelectomy is typically performed when there is a delay in testicular growth in teenage and adolescent boys.<\/p>\n There are two main reasons why the testis may be felt in the groin. Some men have undescended testis,<\/strong> and these are located in the groin. Usually, the testis has not developed normally. Surgery to bring the testis down is often necessary and beneficial.<\/p>\n Some men have descended<\/strong> testes that can intermittently be in a normal position in the scrotum or might migrate up to the groin. This is caused by strong muscle fibers called cremasteric fibers<\/strong> that pull the testes up. We call this situation a “retractile” testis<\/strong>.
