Testicular Prosthesis Side Effects: Groin Discomfort and Pain<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The most common long-term side effect of testicular implant surgery<\/a> is discomfort and pain from a testicular prosthesis<\/strong> that occur in some men. Scar formation, especially in a high-riding position, can also cause discomfort or a less than desirable appearance. \"\"<\/b><\/p>\r\n

Discomfort and Pain after Testicular Implant Surgery: Causes<\/h2>\r\n

Persistent discomfort after testicular prosthesis insertion<\/strong>, lasting more than 3 months, occurs in a small number of men. <\/p>\r\n

Typically, the discomfort is related to the position – sitting, exercising, or crossing legs for example, might make testicular implant felt in the groin or the thigh.  This is most commonly caused by the implantation of the testicular prosthesis in a small scrotum. <\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Many men who have lost the testicle as children do not develop normal-sized scrotum<\/strong> on the side where the testis is lost. Adult men who lose a testicle and seek testicular implants many years later often have shrunken scrotum. Typically, surgeons try to stretch the scrotum before putting an implant in. The scrotum has muscle fibers called ‘cremasteric muscle’,<\/strong> which pulls the scrotal skin “up.”  Stretching the skin during surgery can be helpful for men with mildly decreased scrotum. <\/p>\r\n

However, in men with moderately to the severely hypoplastic or underdeveloped scrotum<\/strong>, the scrotum returns to its normal size shortly after forceful stretching by the surgeon in the operating room.  As a result, once everything heals, the prosthetic testicle tends to sit high up in the scrotum between the penis and the thigh, which can cause discomfort with activity.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Treatment of Groin and Scrotal Discomfort after Testicular Implant Surgery<\/h2>\r\n

The best option for men with very small, shrunken, and underdeveloped scrotum is to undergo scrotal expansion<\/a><\/strong> prior to testicular implant placement over a period of 4-8 weeks. This provides a durable scrotal enlargement.  For men who had previously had testicular implants and experience discomfort and pain due to the high-in-the-scrotum or groin location<\/strong> of the implant, testicular implant revision<\/strong> with scrotal expansion<\/strong> and replacement of testicular implant can resolve this problem. Some men with a fairly developed scrotum, have ‘hyperactive’ cremasteric muscle and develop the equivalent of what urologists call ‘retractile testis”: the implant can be pulled down but eventually goes back up in the scrotum or groin. In this case, injection of Botox can be helpful; alternatively, selective destruction of some cremasteric muscle fibers can help as well.  <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
