Reasons Men Seek to Have Testicular Implant Removal, Replacement, or Revision<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

There are three common reasons<\/strong> that men seek to have testicular prosthesis replacement or revision<\/strong>.  Some men experience pain or discomfort after testicular implants<\/a>. Some men have scarring or develop an infection that requires implant removal and replacement. Occasionally, the implant may erode through the skin, usually caused by an underlying infection.<\/p>\r\n

\"\"Infection<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

In a small number of men, the testicular implant<\/a> gets infected or erodes or protrudes through the scrotal skin. In this situation, the removal of the prosthesis is mandatory. Replacement with a new implant<\/strong> may be performed simultaneously or in a delayed fashion, depending on the particular circumstance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Scarring<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Some men develop significant scarring (hardening of surrounding tissue) near the testicular implant and seek to have a revision and replacement of the implant in an effort to alleviate the scrotal scarring. This is a more challenging procedure, which may not always be successful as scar tissue may recur.<\/p>\r\n

Dissatisfaction with Testicular Implant Consistency (how it feels to touch).<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n

Some men do not like the consistency of the testicular implant<\/strong> that they have. Some men with saline-filled silicone implants may feel that the implant is too stiff or soft and may prefer a pure silicone implant. Other men feel the opposite.  It is always possible to replace the implant<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Testicular Size Discrepancy<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Some men who had a testicular implant placed before puberty or adolescence may want to have a replacement procedure to insert a more appropriate adult-sized implant.<\/strong> This procedure can be performed with great success. Occasionally, an underdeveloped scrotum can make it a little challenging to place a large testicular implant.  When the scrotum is small, we have had good success with scrotal distention<\/strong> in order to place an adult-sized testicular implant.  Occasionally, scrotal expansion<\/a><\/strong> is necessary to place an adequately sized prosthesis in a small scrotum.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Replacement of a small testicular implant with a larger implant can be performed in men of all ages. Recovery is typically fast,<\/strong> and most men are able to return to usual activities in a few days.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Saline-filled Torosa silicone testicular implants<\/strong> are available in 4 sizes: extra small and small are pediatric sizes (2.2 cm x 3 cm and 2.5 cm x 3.5 cm); medium (2.7 cm x 4.0 cm) and large (2.9 cm x 4.5 cm) are adult sizes. Typically, we recommend a replacement from extra small and small<\/strong> to medium and large<\/strong>. For men who already have a medium size implant, replacement with a large will not provide a dramatic increase in size as they are fairly close in size: 2.7 cm vs. 2.9 cm wide and 4.0 vs. 4.5 cm tall.<\/p>\r\n

Loss of Fluid or Under-filling of Saline-filled Testicular Implants<\/h2>\r\n

Occasionally, the implant may be under-filled with saline and, as a result, feels under-inflated.  Sometimes, with saline-filled testicular implants, the implant wall becomes more compliant (loses rebound resilience), and the implant appears incompletely filled or incompletely inflated<\/strong>. There are two options available in this situation:  an attempt at adding sterile saline can be made to fully inflate the prosthesis; alternatively, a replacement implant may be placed.<\/p>\r\n

We are able to add fluid to the saline-filled Torosa testicular implants in our office under local anesthesia<\/strong>. The procedure takes less than 30 minutes. No preparation is necessary.  There may not be scrotal infection or inflammation when the procedure is performed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
