Perineal pain occurs adjacent to the anus.  Typically the pain or discomfort is located in the area between the anus and vagina in women, and between the anus and the scrotum or penis in men.<\/p>\n

Perineal pain<\/strong> is related to peri-anal pain<\/strong>, and sometimes they are used interchangeably.  Peri-anal pain is more often caused by gastrointestinal issues such as anal fissures, hemorrhoids, etc.<\/p>\n

Perineal pain can vary in severity. Perineal pain can be severe or felt as mild perineal discomfort or soreness<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The common causes of chronic perineal pain in men<\/a> include prostatitis \/ pelvic pain syndrome and urinary tract obstruction in men.<\/p>\n

Perineal pain in women is often related to interstitial cystitis \/ pelvic pain syndrome in women.  It may also be caused by neuropathic pain.<\/p>\n

Causes of perineal pain vary.  Treatment is individualized to each patient based on history, physical exam, and prior treatment failure. We see many patients who have had pelvic or perineal pain for many years and who have tried numerous treatments in the past.  While there are no guarantees, we have been able to help many patients who have not benefitted from multiple approaches to treatment and who have been suffering from pain for many years. <\/p>\n

Treatment for pelvic and perineal pain may require trying a few different treatment approaches sequentially or in combination to determine what works best for you.  Because the causes of perineal pain are so numerous, treatment approaches vary and depend on individual patient’s symptoms and coexisting medical problems as well as surgical history.<\/p>\n
