Sometimes there is no palpable lump in the penis and the diagnosis of Peyronie\u2019s disease is suggested by pain in the penis<\/strong>, penile curvature<\/a>,<\/strong> or hourglass appearance of the penis<\/a>. <\/p>\n It is not uncommon for more than one penile plaque or lumps to be found in the penis in men with Peyronie’s disease. <\/p>\n Not all penile lumps are Peyronie’s plaques. Other causes of lumps in the penis may be penile cancer<\/strong>, dystrophic calcification, and other conditions. It is important to see an urologist for evaluation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Penile ultrasound<\/a> can be performed to visualize penile plaque.<\/p>\n The reasons for the formation of penile plaque leading to Peyronie\u2019s disease<\/strong><\/a> are complex. Scar formation involves the interaction of genetics, modifiable risk factors such as diabetes, and penile trauma.<\/p>\n Some men with Peyronie\u2019s disease have a history of penile pain during sex<\/strong><\/a> and subsequently notice penile curvature a few weeks or a few months later. Other men do not recall any history of trauma.<\/p>\n Penile trauma<\/strong> may be microscopic and not obviously painful or noticeable to the patient. The abnormal healing process that usually leads to the resolution of the scar tissue, causes abnormal scar formation which asymmetrically shortens and contracts penile tissue. This leads to penile curvature.<\/p>\n Some men are genetically predisposed<\/strong> to Peyronie’s disease and also have Dupuytren’s contracture<\/strong> (scar tissue on the palms of the hands and fingers causing curvature or difficulty opening up the palm or straightening the fingers).<\/p>\n Occasionally, men with particular medical conditions such as diabetes, priapism, and kidney failure are predisposed to forming calcified plaques in the body. When this process occurs in the penis it can lead to Peyronie’s disease.<\/p>\n Many patients with Peyronie’s disease have a palpable lump in their penis called “Peyronie’s plaque<\/strong>“. Some men with Peyronie’s disease do not have a palpable Peyronie’s plaque. Sometimes but not always Peyronie’s plaque can be seen on ultrasound of the penis<\/a>.<\/p>\n A man without a palpable Peyronie’s plaque<\/strong> can still have Peyronie’s disease if they have any of the other symptoms that commonly occur with Peyronie’s disease: bent penis, pain in the penis or penile narrowing.<\/p>\n Treatment options for penile plaque depend on the severity of symptoms and the quality of erections.
