Oral Medications Used for Treatment of Peyronie’s Disease<\/h1>\n

What Pills are Effective for Treatment of Peyronie’s Disease<\/h2>\n

\"OralIn general, currently available oral medications<\/strong> that have been shown to help men with Peyronie’s disease have limited effectiveness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Typically improvement seen with oral medications alone is not sufficient<\/strong> to make a significant improvement in most symptoms of Peyronie’s disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Oral medications<\/strong> are best used in combination with other treatment options, in particular, injection therapy<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In my view, the reason to use oral therapies is two-fold:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. It may help some men with pain symptoms<\/a> caused by Peyronie’s disease<\/strong>.  These medications include Cialis<\/a> and Potaba.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. Prevent the worsening of penile curvature<\/strong> and prevent disease progression: CoQ10 <\/a><\/strong>has been suggested to have a beneficial effect. Since it’s a safe supplement,<\/strong> and good for the heart as well, – I recommend it generously.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What Oral Treatments Have No<\/span> Benefit?<\/h2>\n

    Just as important as knowing what works<\/a><\/strong>, it is important to know what does not<\/strong> work.<\/p>\n

    Colchicine, vitamin E, and tamoxifen do not<\/strong> help with Peyronie’s disease and should not<\/strong> be used for that purpose.<\/p>\n

    CoQ10 (Co-enzyme Q10) for Peyronie’s<\/h2>\n

    \"CoQ10\"CoQ10<\/strong> is a non-prescription<\/strong> vitamin\/supplement that has been found to have a beneficial effect on Peyronie\u2019s disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    While the benefit is not tremendous, CoQ10 is very safe<\/strong>; it is inexpensive, and as an added benefit is good for your heart.<\/p>\n

    It appears that CoQ10 is most likely beneficial to men with new Peyronie’s disease<\/a><\/strong> without a hard calcified Peyronie’s plaque. Studies suggest that at the very least CoQ10 helps prevent disease progression<\/strong> and worsening of the curvature and other symptoms of Peyronie’s disease<\/p>\n

    CoQ10 is a very safe supplement. As a matter of fact, it is also beneficial for the heart and is often recommended supplement by cardiologists.<\/p>\n

    The typical recommended dose of CoQ10<\/strong> is 300-600 mg once a day.<\/p>\n

    Potaba (Aminobenzoate Potassium)<\/h2>\n

    Potaba<\/strong> appears to benefit men with penile pain caused by Peyronie’s disease<\/a><\/strong>.  Potaba requires a fairly challenging regimen of multiple doses a day.  Other options for the treatment of penile pain<\/a><\/strong> include tadalafil daily, shockwave therapy<\/a>, verapamil injections<\/a><\/strong>, and interferon injections<\/a><\/strong>.  We do not prescribe Potaba often.<\/p>\n

    Pentoxifylline for Peyronie\u2019s disease: What’s the Evidence?<\/b><\/h1>\n


    \n\"Peyronie'sPentoxifylline<\/strong> has been found to have a beneficial effect on men with Peyronie\u2019s disease in one randomized control study.  However, in 2015, the paper was retracted by the authors – apparently statistical analysis was incorrectly done<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

    At this point there is no data to support that pentoxifylline has a significant beneficial effect<\/strong> on the course of Peyronie’s disease.  Mechanism of action of pentoxifylline suggests that it may have a beneficial effect for Peyronie’s.<\/p>\n

    At this point, I do not<\/strong> advise pentoxifylline for the treatment of men with Peyronie’s disease.  Oral therapy for Peyronie’s disease<\/a>, in general,<\/strong> is not very effective.<\/p>\n
