Important Considerations In Measuring Penile Curvature.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Quality of erection<\/strong> can affect the measurement of penis curvature<\/a><\/strong>.  Other factors are also important in determining a treatment plan in addition to penile curvature.<\/p>\n

How to Measure Penis Curvature when the Penis is Curved?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"Penis curvature is often measured in men with bent penis caused by Peyronie’s disease<\/a><\/strong> or congenital penile curvature<\/a> to determine the severity of the problem and to establish a baseline.<\/p>\n

There are a few ways to measure penile curvature. <\/p>\n

One option is to use a picture taken by the patient<\/strong> and estimate penile curvature from the picture.  Patient-taken pictures are useful for the initial evaluation of penile curvature<\/strong>. It allows a urologist to see the severity of curvature and possibly associated abnormalities such as hourglass appearance<\/a><\/strong> (penile “waist” or narrowing in the middle of the penis).    <\/p>\n

Android and iPhone Apps have been created in an effort to help measure penile curvature from the picture.<\/p>\n

Measurement of curvature from an image may give an accurate measurement for some patients but not always. The measurement may be wrong if the erection is not fully hard.  Two-dimensional images may not accurately represent the three-dimensional complexity<\/strong> of the curvature; the hourglass appearance may be unappreciated or under-appreciated on the image. In addition, depending on the way the picture is taken, the lateral curvature component may be under-appreciated. <\/p>\n

It is important to realize that pictures may not accurately represent a complex three-dimensional nature of the curvature<\/strong> and often the associated abnormalities such as hourglass deformity or narrowing of the penile shaft<\/strong> as well as a loss of penile hardness<\/strong><\/a> may not be appreciated easily from a picture.   This is especially true in complex, multidimensional penile curvature<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A picture taken from the top may not allow a full appreciation of the dorsal curvature<\/a> and ventral curvature<\/a> but is useful in the evaluation of lateral curvature.  On the other hand, a picture taken at a 90-degree angle from the side is useful for the evaluation of dorsal and ventral curvature (penis pointing up or down).<\/p>\n

A more traditional and useful way to evaluate penile curvature <\/strong>is by inducing an artificial erection<\/strong> in the office with medications such as prostaglandin or Trimix.  This is what we do at New York Urology Specialists<\/a>.<\/p>\n

How Precise Is Measurement Of Penile Curvature?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Because the penis is a little bit floppy, it is not easy to get an exact measurement<\/strong> of penile curvature.  As a matter of fact, the same person measuring penis 2 or 3 times he is likely to get different results that vary by 5-10\u00b0, depending on where exactly the goniometer (the device used to measure angles) is positioned.  In other words, the measurement process introduces 5-10 degree variability in the measurement of the curvature.<\/p>\n

Underestimation of Penile Curvature is Common.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There are a number of reasons why the measurement of penile curvature may underestimate the true severity of curvature<\/strong> are caused by  Peyronie’s disease.<\/p>\n

In patients with Peyronie’s disease, there is typically no noticeable curvature when the penis is not erect.  When the penis gets erect the curvature starts to become noticeable.  Unless the curvature is measured when the penis is fully erect, the curvature will be underestimated sometimes by a significant amount<\/strong>.  Many men experience Peyronie’s associated ED leading to decreased erection hardness.<\/p>\n

A severe 90\u00b0 curvature may appear as only a minor 20-30\u00b0 curvature if the penis is only 50% erect<\/strong>.  For this reason, it is very important to get an adequate erection that is at least 85-90% hard to fully evaluate the severity of penile curvature<\/strong>.  In addition, secondary and three-dimensional curvature appearance may not be well appreciated if the erection is not full.<\/p>\n

In fact, it is not uncommon that patients with severe erectile dysfunction are unable to get an adequate erection with an injection of Trimix in the office<\/strong>. When these patients undergo treatment for erectile dysfunction with a penile prosthesis, often Peyronie’s disease is first recognized intraoperatively during the insertion of the penile implant once the implant is inflated during surgery<\/strong> and curvature is noted.<\/p>\n
