Treatment of Pain from Peyronie’s Disease: What You Need to Know<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\"\"<\/strong>Beneficial Effect of Shockwave Therapy for the Treatment of Peyronie\u2019s Disease-Associated Pain<\/h2>\n

Multiple studies demonstrate that shockwave therapy<\/strong> is an effective treatment for pain<\/strong><\/a> associated with Peyronie’s disease<\/a><\/strong>.  Randomized controlled studies show a statistically significant improvement in pain compared to placebo<\/strong> in patients who received low-intensity shockwave therapy.<\/p>\n

Shockwave therapy is administered in our office without the need for anesthesia.  The procedure takes about 20 minutes per session<\/strong>.  While normally shockwave therapy does not cause any pain, in patients with tender penile nodule patients typically experience some pain and discomfort<\/strong> that typically improves after the first few sessions.<\/p>\n

Does Shockwave Therapy Help with Curvature associated with Peyronie\u2019s Disease?<\/h2>\n

While there are some low-level studies without a placebo control group<\/strong> and that are not performed as randomized controlled studies<\/strong> that show some benefit of shockwave therapy in improving penile curvature associated with Peyronie’s disease, high-quality studies do NOT<\/span> show any significant benefit<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

It is important to remember that a small number of men will have spontaneous resolution or improvement in Peyronie’s disease symptoms<\/strong>.  In addition, if Peyronie’s disease gets worse and affects erectile dysfunction<\/span>, the penile curvature will be less noticeable and will be underestimated on subsequent measurements<\/a><\/strong> leading to a false result that the curvature is getting better while it actually may be getting worse. <\/p>\n

Without high-quality randomized controlled studies with a placebo arm, it is highly likely that the studies are not providing reliable information.<\/strong>  There is certainly a significant financial incentive<\/strong> for many providers including those who have no qualifications (non-urologists) when he comes to the treatment of Peyronie’s disease<\/a><\/strong> to promote shockwave therapy.<\/p>\n

The bottom line:<\/strong> <\/span>Shockwave therapy helps with penile pain. Shockwave therapy does NOT<\/strong> help with curvature or hourglass appearance.<\/p>\n

Shockwave Therapy for Treatment of Peyronie’s-associated Erectile Dysfunction<\/h2>\n

It is fairly well-established based on a significant number of high quality randomized controlled studies that low-intensity shockwave therapy for the treatment of erectile dysfunction associated with vascular risk factors<\/strong> such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes leads to improvement in erection quality<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Many patients with Peyronie’s disease have risk factors for vascular erectile dysfunction including age, presence of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, coronary artery disease, or diabetes.<\/p>\n

Peyronie’s disease also has a direct effect on erectile function in many men<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Some studies in men with Peyronie’s disease show a trend in the improvement of erectile function while other studies do not show significant benefit<\/strong>.  This discrepancy is likely attributable to the different etiologies of erectile dysfunction in men with Peyronie’s disease. <\/p>\n

Some men with purely Peyronie’s induced erectile dysfunction may not experience significant benefit from shockwave therapy for the treatment of severe erectile dysfunction.  <\/strong>On the other hand, men who have combined risk factors including vascular induced erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s<\/strong> induced erectile dysfunction may experience some benefit from shockwave therapy for ED.<\/p>\n
