Treatment for Peyronie’s Disease after Prostate Surgery: What You Need to Know<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Treatment for prostate cancer with radical prostatectomy as well as radiation is a suspected risk factor for the development of Peyronie’s disease.<\/p>\n

Prostate removal with radical prostatectomy<\/strong> is associated with the development of several symptoms of Peyronie’s disease including loss of penile length<\/strong>, scar formation and fibrosis of the penis<\/strong>, Peyronie’s plaque, and penile curvature<\/a>.  Studies report a 15% chance of Peyronie’s disease diagnosis<\/strong> within a few years after radical prostatectomy.<\/p>\n

Treatment of Peyronie’s disease after Radical Prostatectomy for Prostate cancer <\/h2>\n

It is important to understand that many men experience erection difficulties after radical prostatectomy<\/a>. Typically recovery of erectile function can take 6 to 9 months.<\/p>\n

Many men require medications such as tadalafil<\/strong> (Cialis) or Viagra to get an erection after treatment for prostate cancer. For some, oral medications do not work and penile injections are prescribed.  Penile injections<\/a> are associated with a risk of Peyronie’s disease.  The exact cause and timing of the onset of Peyronie’s disease are often difficult to determine. Men tend to get diagnosed with Peyronie’s disease 1 to 3 years after their treatment of prostate cancer. The diagnosis of Peyronie’s disease is often incidental during the evaluation of erectile dysfunction.<\/p>\n

With rare exceptions, plaque excision<\/a> alone is not a viable option for men with Peyronie’s disease after treatment for prostate cancer due to the presence of underlying erectile dysfunction. <\/p>\n

For men who are able to obtain adequate erections with the use of oral PDE-5 inhibitors such as Viagra and Cialis (tadalafil and sildenafil)<\/a><\/strong>, and who have a palpable plaque<\/a>, Xiaflex<\/a> may be tried along with penile traction therapy<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For men with severe hourglass appearance<\/a>, significant erectile dysfunction will nonpalpable plaque, penile implant<\/a> <\/strong>usually offers the most effective treatment.  We have successfully treated many men with penile implants.<\/p>\n
