Freedom of Information Act Requests – Centers for Medicare and Medicaid: What You Need to Know

The Center for American Healthcare at New York Urology Specialists is committed to making American healthcare more effective and more affordable.

To accomplish its mission, we are committed to put to light policies and practices at the CMS and other governmental, private and public organizations that work against the interests of American consumers.

Making Healthcare Work for American People: Price Transparency, Patient Choice, and Breaking Down Information Asymmetry

The Center for American Healthcare at New York Urology Specialists has made numerous requests in the interests of transparency to expose policies and practices at CMS that are contrary to the interests of American consumers and appear to serve private interests.

This page is dedicated to publishing and disseminating documents that were received in response to the FOIA requests in the interests of informing the American public about potentially questionable decisions and choices made by their government officials that may not serve the public policy goals or patient interests.

High Cost of Healthcare in the US

There are many reasons healthcare costs are high in the US. Some of the reasons are justifiable, such as those that lead to improvement of health and decrease of disability.  If there is a new treatment for a disease that previously had no cure, spending extra $100 or $1,000 may be justifiable. You might choose to cure Hepatitis C, a deadly disease, and skip 3 vacations. You might actually find that while expensive, it’s a great deal for your personally.

On the other hand, some costs are wasteful. You may pay a lot but get no value in return. This happens often when there is no competition, or if certain government interventions allow one player to unjustly profit from their ‘place in the system.”

Over the past decade, ‘wasteful spending’ has been a significant driver of healthcare expenditures.  CMS, unfortunately has been ‘asleep’ or possibly a co-conspirator in the wasteful spending in the US.  Prime examples of this are fringe-practices by certain health plans and clearinghouses such as paying doctors, hospitals, medical practices and other healthcare providers using “virtual credit cards”, charging fees for delivering paper checks, EFT (electronic funds transfers), and ERA (electronic remittance advice).

There are a number of companies involved in shady business practices which include:

  • Zelis Healthcare
  • Vpay
  • Echo Health
  • AMA Insurance

Health Plans:

  • GlobalExcel
  • HealthFirst
  • Stirling Benefits
  • Meritain Health

Open Invitation to Health Plans and Clearinghouses Named Above

We look forward to your lawsuits, and would greatly enjoy engaging in the discovery process.

Open Invitation to Victims of Unfair Business Practices, “Virtual Credit Cards”, EFT Fees, and Lawyers Who Want to Sue Them

We would be happy to help put well-funded lawyers willing to take on the insurance industry and put them with affected healthcare providers.

Top Problems Facing American Healthcare

  • Lack of consumer choice and information asymmetry
  • Complex and fragmented regulation driving the costs of healthcare and impeding competition
