Genital Warts and New Sexual Partners: What You Need to Know

If you are having sex with a new partner, practice safe sex and use a condom. Remember, however, that condoms are not very effective against HPV as they only prevent transmission of HPV infection from the covered area.

It may be a good idea to consider HPV vaccination for your sexual partner before engaging in intercourse to minimize the risk of passing HPV infection to your sexual partner.  (Most recurrent warts are not re-infections).

It is also important to understand that no single treatment works for every patient. And not all treatments for genital warts are equally effective. Talk to an experienced physician at New York Urology Specialists to find out which treatment would work best for you. Surgical excision is associated with less risk of recurrence compared to medications and cryoablation (freezing) and is recommended for people with recurrent genital warts.

How Can the Chance of Genital Wart Recurrence Be Lowered?

You can reduce your risk of recurrent genital warts by getting vaccinated. The HPV vaccine Gardasil-9 is FDA-approved and protects against most HPV types that cause genital warts.

At New York Urology Specialists the HPV vaccine is offered to men and women between 12 and 45 years old. While the vaccine works best before you are infected with HPV, there are studies that suggest that HPV vaccination may decrease genital wart recurrence.   HPV may also be appropriate for some men and women over age 45.  At New York Urology Specialists we vaccinate men and women over age 45 who desire HPV vaccination.  Talk to our specialists about your eligibility for the HPV vaccine to prevent frequent genital warts.
