Genital warts may develop weeks, months, or years after sexual contact with an infected person. That’s why it’s difficult to know who gave whom an HPV infection. You or your partner may have been infected a long time ago.

Only certain strains of the HPV virus cause warts in the genital areas of men and women. Not everyone who is infected with a wart-causing strain of the HPV virus actually develops genital warts. That’s why it’s difficult to say when you got infected and from whom you got the infection.

I Don’t Have Genital Warts. Why is My Partner Blaming Me for a Sexually Transmitted Infection?

You could have been infected in the past with an HPV type that causes warts but you never developed warts yourself. You can still transmit the infection to your partner who may develop genital warts.   Another possibility is that your partner got infected prior to your relationship but warts developed only now.  It may take weeks or months and sometimes longer from the time of infection to visible warts to develop.

Can I Get Genital Warts from Oral Sex? Does HPV Cause Mouth and Throat Cancer?

Skin-to-skin contact during deep kissing and oral sex can transmit the HPV virus from person to person. The chances of cancer of the mouth and throat are higher in people who have had many sexual partners. Younger people can be protected against HPV-related oral cancer by getting vaccinated with Gardasil-9 which is the HPV vaccine.

Older people or those who are already infected can prevent the spread of the virus during oral-vaginal, penile-vaginal, penile-oral, and penile-anal sexual intercourse by using a condom or dental dam. HPV vaccination of sexual partners can decrease the risk or prevent HPV transmission from an infected person to their sexual partner(s).  The HPV vaccine may also be a reasonable option for older men and women.

Can I Get Genital Warts from Anal Sex? Does HPV Cause Anal Warts?

During anal sex, the HPV virus can spread into the anal canal can cause warts to develop. Condoms do not provide complete protection because they cover only the penis and HPV may be present in other areas, such as the scrotum, which is not covered by the condom.  Similarly one can get anal warts from anal sex.

I Don’t Engage in Anal Sex. How Did I Get Anal Warts Without Anal Sex?

It doesn’t matter if you have anal sex or not. If you have oral or vaginal sex with someone who has an HPV infection, you can get infected, and that can cause perineal and peri-anal warts in you. This is because of the proximity of the anal region to the perineum (the area between the vulva and anus or the scrotum and anus).

How Can I Prevent HPV and Genital Warts?

Vaccination with Gardasil 9 offers the best option for prevention. Vaccination is best administered before the onset of sexual activity (teenagers/adolescents) but can be given later in life.
