HPV Vaccination in Men with Penis Warts and Scrotum Warts

Does Gardasil-9 Vaccination Help Men with HPV warts?

Genital warts are highly infectious. A large percentage of men who have a sexual partner with genital warts will develop warts themselves. The HPV vaccination is highly effective against genital warts in both men and women.

Men who received Gardasil at the recommended age of 12 to 45 years are usually protected against genital warts. Men in their 30s and 40s who get the HPV vaccine are less likely to transmit the virus to new sexual partners. If a man has visible genital warts, it is best that his sexual partner(s) are vaccinated.

Low-risk strains of the HPV virus (types 6 and 11) cause 90 percent of penile, scrotal, and anal warts in men. In men with genital warts due to one type of HPV virus, the Gardasil-9 vaccine can protect against other HPV types that cause genital warts. Based on studies in women, the HPV vaccine can reduce the risk of precancerous lesions in women infected with HPV.  This suggests that vaccination is likely to decrease the recurrence rate of genital warts. However, the vaccine is not a treatment for warts.

Studies show that HPV vaccination has a significant impact on decreasing anogenital warts. Gay men are prone to develop anal warts as well as anal cancer from HPV infection. Gardasil-9 might protect against other HPV virus strains including cancer-causing strains in men who have anal warts. Vaccination might also decrease wart recurrence in men with frequent recurrences.
