STD Symptoms: What You Need to Know

Common Symptoms of STDs in Men

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are passed on from person to person through unprotected sexual intercourse but some infections can also spread during sex with a condom through genital skin-to-skin contact. In men, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can cause a number of symptoms, including:

  • Blisters or sores on the genital organs
  • Skin growths or lumps around the genitals
  • Unusual (bloody, cloudy, clear, or smelly) discharge from the penis or anus
  • Inflammation of the urethra (urethritis) and pain with urination
  • Pain during ejaculation
  • Itching of the genitals
  • Rash
  • Systemic symptoms throughout the body

It’s important to remember that many men with STIs are completely symptom-free. However, the absence of symptoms does not mean that the infection cannot be passed on to sex partner(s). For example, it’s possible to spread genital herpes even when there are no symptoms or sores.

Very often, infections with human papillomavirus (HPV), chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis produce no STD symptoms in men, especially in the early stages. This means many men do not realize they’re infected.

Each sexually transmitted disease has an incubation period (the time between first getting infected and the appearance of signs and symptoms). That’s why routine STD testing is recommended even if someone feels well and has no symptoms of STIs.

Where to Get Tested for STIs in NYC?

At New York Urology Specialists, we offer same-day STI testing and treatment for men and women.

We also perform comprehensive STD testing for other infections. We offer confidential appointments. Our prices are affordable with or without insurance.  Call/text today: 1-646-663-4125 or make an appointment online.

Can You Have an STD Without Knowing it?

You or your partner could have an STD without knowing it and could infect each other during sex. It’s a good idea to consistently practice safe sex (oral, vaginal, or anal) with a condom to reduce the risk of transmission of STIs.

Simultaneous testing and treatment of you and your partner for sexually transmitted infections can help protect you both.  Talk to a board-certified urologist at New York Urology Specialists today to schedule same-day, confidential STD testing. Our offices are conveniently located and easily accessible for residents of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island.

How Do I Know If My Partner Gave Me an STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection)?

Sexually transmitted diseases primarily spread through sex, genital contact, and blood, semen, or vaginal fluids. It’s unlikely for anyone to get an STI through nonsexual means. If you’ve been in a long-term committed relationship for many years and haven’t cheated on your partner, it can be devastating to discover you have an STD. However, being diagnosed with an STI isn’t necessarily a sign of infidelity by your partner. Many men and women with sexually transmitted infections are symptom-free. Either you or your partner could have got infected long before you got together.  It’s always a good relationship for both partners to get tested to make sure they are infection-free when then enter into a new relationship.

There’s no way to know for sure if your partner gave you an STD. Unless both partners are tested before they have sex, it’s nearly impossible to say who was infected first. It’s possible to get an STI from a person who seems perfectly healthy.

Routine testing for STDs can be helpful in identifying who infected you and when. If you have been diagnosed with an STI, it’s important for your partner to undergo testing as well. Schedule an appointment today with top urologists at New York Urology Specialists for reliable, confidential STD screening and treatment advice.

Can STD Symptoms Be Cured?

STDs caused by bacteria, such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis, can be cured with antibiotic treatment especially if diagnosed and treated early. While gonorrhea can be cured with antibiotics, if it is diagnosed with a long delay it can cause irreversible problems such as infertility.

Viral STDs, such as HPV, HIV, and genital herpes, cannot be easily cured, but the symptoms can be suppressed with medications.

The HPV vaccination is available to protect and decrease the risk of it coming back. However, vaccines are not very effective if someone already has the disease. Effective treatments are available to manage the symptoms of STIs that cannot be cured, for example, HIV/AIDS, tertiary syphilis, herpes, and genital warts.

If you have been prescribed an antibiotic for a sexually transmitted disease, it’s important to take the drug as prescribed and to complete the course even if symptoms disappear. Taking someone else’s medication to self-treat an STI can make it more difficult to cure. Call us at New York Urology Specialists and speak to experienced urologists in STDs to understand your treatment options.
