STI in Men: A Common Problem

STDs Are Very Common in Men

A nationwide study of more than 9,000 American men aged 14-59 showed that there is high seropositivity for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), in other words, many men have been exposed or are infected with STDs.

Overall 0.7% of men tested positive for HIV, 61% have tested positive for herpes and 14% tested positive for HPV.

HPV or human papillomavirus causes penile and genital warts in men, predisposes to penile cancer, oral cancer, and anal cancer.  It is also a major cause of cervical cancer in women.  HPV Vaccination is recommended for all boy and girls and young men and women by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) with Gardasil vaccine.

In contrast to studies from Africa which showed that circumcision decreases the risk of HIV, the American study did not detect the same benefit. This is most likely a result of the much lower risk of HIV in the population, 0.7% in the United States compared to 15-30% in Africa.  It is possible that American men who engage in high-risk sexual activity may benefit more from adult circumcision when it comes to HIV transmission.

The study did show that circumcision appears to decrease the chances that a man gets infected with herpes.
