Not everyone who has a trichomonas infection can tell that they are infected. In fact, only about one-third of people with trich infection develop any symptoms. We do not know why some people get symptoms and others remain symptom-free. Age and overall health status likely play a role. When present, trichomoniasis symptoms can range in severity from mild irritation to severe inflammation.

Trichomoniasis Symptoms in Men may include:

Irritation or itching in the penis

Burning with ejaculation or urination

Unusual discharge from the penis

Trichomoniasis symptoms in Women may include:

Soreness, redness, burning of the genitals

Itching of the inner thighs

Pain or burning with urination

Unusual vaginal discharge (increased volume, thin discharge, clear/white/yellow/green in color)

Foul-smelling vaginal odor (fishy smell)

Discomfort with sexual intercourse

Symptoms of trich usually appear 5 to 28 days after infection but can appear much later. Trichomonas symptoms may wax and wane (come and go) and women with trich may find sex unpleasant.

If you think you may have trichomoniasis, talk to the board-certified urologists at New York Urology Specialists today. It’s important for both you and your partner to get tested and treated. Without treatment, trichomonas infections can fester for months or even years.

How Did I Get Trichomonas? My Girlfriend has Trich – Did She Give It To Me?

Trichomonas is a sexually transmitted infection. The parasite is passed from person to person during sex. It can spread from the penis to the vagina, vagina to the penis, and vagina to the vagina. Other parts of the body, such as the hands, mouth, or anus are not usually infected by the parasite.

Before worrying about infidelity or blaming your partner, remember that 7 out of 10 people with trich infection do not develop any symptoms. However, an infected person without any symptoms can still spread the infection to others. So, it’s possible you or your partner got infected before you were in a relationship with each other.

If you think you have trich, don’t jump to conclusions. Many of the symptoms of trichomonas are nonspecific, i.e., they can be caused by other STDs. Routine testing for STDs is important. It’s not possible to diagnose trich based on symptoms alone.

Schedule an appointment with the fellowship-trained urologists at New York Urology Specialists to confirm the diagnosis and get appropriate treatment.

How Long Does It Take for Trich to Show Up on a Test?

Symptoms can take 5-28 days to appear but trich will show up on testing an infected person anytime after they are infected.

Can Trichomoniasis Be Detected in a Urine Test?

Trichomonas can be detected on a urine test. At New York Urology Specialists we do DNA-based testing for trichomonas which is very reliable. Urine testing avoids the discomfort of swab testing. Trichomonas can also be detected in vaginal or urethral discharge under a microscope and on Pap tests in women. It can be hard to diagnose trich in men.

Treatment for trichomoniasis is offered to men and women if a sexual partner is diagnosed with this STI. If symptoms of urethral itching and burning continue despite treatment for gonorrhea and chlamydia, treatment for trich may be offered (link).

How Can I Get Treated for Trich? How Effective are Antibiotics for Treatment of Trichomonas?

Trichomoniasis is a curable STD. A single course of antibiotics is effective in curing 90 percent of people. Studies show that a 2-gram single oral dose of metronidazole or tinidazole is effective in most people. Stubborn infections may require longer treatment with larger doses of antibiotics.

If symptoms are not better after treatment, it is possible that other infections such as chlamydia, or gonorrhea are causing your symptoms.

It is important for sex partners to be tested and treated at the same time to avoid passing the infection back and forth. Sexual intercourse should be avoided until one week after the last dose of antibiotic for trich.

The most common drugs prescribed for trichomonas are Flagyl (metronidazole) and Tindamax or Fasigyn (tinidazole). Flagyl comes as a tablet to be taken by mouth or as a gel to be applied to the vagina. Trichomonas can be cured with a single dose of antibiotics (metronidazole or tinidazole). It is safe for pregnant women to take these medications. Alcohol should be avoided for 24 hours after taking this drug or it can cause vomiting and severe abdominal pain. Side effects of the medication include nausea, vomiting, and a metallic taste in the mouth, which can be minimized by taking the medication after a meal (link).

Treatment for trichomoniasis does not protect against future infections. In fact, 1 in 5 people gets re-infected within 3 months of antibiotic treatment. To avoid getting re-infected, it’s important for all sex partners to get tested and treated for trich at the same time and to wait for about a week after symptoms go away before having sex.

How Dangerous is Trich Infection?

Trichomonas infection causes genital inflammation and increases the chances of getting and spreading other STDs, such as HIV. Long-term trich infections in women can lead to changes in the cervix which may be visible on routine Pap smear. In pregnant women, trichomoniasis is associated with preterm delivery and low birth weight. Treatment for trichomoniasis prevents it from spreading to sexual partners. In men, untreated trich can cause prostatitis and epididymitis (link).

Trichomonas Testing in New York City for Men and Women

New York Urology Specialists is a full-service urology office.
