Genital warts<\/a><\/strong> can disappear occasionally on their own, they can grow bigger or they can stay the same.<\/p>\n

There are many options for the treatment of genital warts<\/strong> including medications such as imiquimod cream<\/strong>, cryoablation<\/strong>, fulguration and surgical removal<\/strong> in the office or the operating room.  None of these treatments cure an HPV infection.<\/p>\n

Even after genital wart removal, the patient may still infect their partner even though there is no visible disease<\/strong>.  It is not known how long and when the person continues to pose infection risks to their sexual partners after genital wart removal.<\/p>\n

When one sexual partner is infected with HPV or has genital warts and the other does not it may be reasonable to consider HPV vaccination<\/a><\/strong> for the unaffected sexual partner.<\/p>\n

Prevention of Genital Warts<\/h2>\n

Safe sexual practices can decrease the chances of HPV infection<\/a> and the development of genital warts.  However, condoms do not completely protect from HPV or from genital warts as a virus may be transmitted through the uncovered areas.<\/p>\n

The choice of treatment for genital warts in men depends on wart size<\/strong>, number of warts<\/strong>, the location of warts, cost, convenience, patient preference, and provider experience.<\/p>\n
