What are the Complications Caused by Untreated Bladder Stones?

Prompt treatment of bladder stones is important to minimize the risk of future complications.

Bladder Stones in MenUrinary tract infections

Recurrent episodes of serious bacterial infections are very common in individuals with bladder stones.  Removal of bladder stones often cures urinary infections. In men with incomplete bladder emptying or bladder diverticulum, treatment of enlarged prostate or bladder diverticulum may be necessary to resolve frequent UTI.

Chronic Bladder Dysfunction

If bladder stones are not managed promptly, obstruction and inflammation caused by bladder stones can alter the normal functioning of the urinary bladder. In some cases, bladder stones may obstruct the urethral passage and interrupt the free flow of urine.

Other complications include acute renal failure and overflow urinary incontinence.  Bladder stones also predispose to increased risk of developing bladder cancer.
