Uribel for Treatment of Urinary Pain

Uribel is a medication that helps with urinary burning and pain. It contains several compounds, including methenamine, hyoscyamine, sodium biphosphate, phenyl salicylate, and methylene blue.

Uribel, and similar medications such as pyridium, urostat, and Azo are urinary anesthetic medications that can help men and women with burning during or after urination as well as pain with urination.

Uribel is useful for patients who have pain after urinary surgeries such as cystoscopy, ureteroscopy for kidney stones, bladder tumor resection, and prostate surgery (TURP, Holmium laser, enucleation of the prostate, Rezum treatment for BPH).  It also helps with bladder pain, urethral pain, and urinary pain from UTI and other inflammatory processes.

What You Need to Know About Uribel

Uribel is a safe and effective medication that can help men and women get relief from urinary burning, stinging, and discomfort during urination. Uribel is not an antibiotic, and it will NOT treat a urinary tract infection.

Urinary burning and pain are often associated with UTIs and sexually transmitted diseases.  Occasionally, these symptoms may also be caused by incomplete bladder emptying or bladder cancer.  Patients with urinary pain should be evaluated by a urologist. Uribel Makes Urine Blue

Uribel has a dye component that is safe for consumption but is known to turn urine to a blue color. Patients who have had recent urological surgery and might have blood in their urine may see dark almost black urine as a result of blood mixing with the blue dye from Uribel. Once Uribel washes out from the system, which typically occurs within 24 hours after taking the medication, the urine will go back to its normal yellowish color.

On the other hand, pyridium usually makes urine orange.

Uribel Side Effects

Most people tolerate the medication well without any serious side effects. Some patients may develop side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, blurred vision, rapid pulse, drowsiness, or dizziness. If the side effects are persistent or severe, other treatment options may need to be considered. Minor side effects of Uribel such as dry mouth can be relieved by sucking on ice chips or sugarless hard candy and drinking water.

Uribel Dosage

For relief of irritative voiding symptoms due to UTIs or diagnostic procedures, Uribel is typically prescribed one capsule two to three times a day with a liberal intake of water and other fluids.

Uribel and Antibiotics

Uribel is often prescribed alongside antibiotics to temporarily relieve pain during urination while antibiotics are fighting off the infection. It is safe to take antibiotics along with Uribel. It can be taken with or without food. You may take it alongside the antibiotics at the same time or you may take it separately from the antibiotics for treatment of UTI.
