What are the Symptoms of Bladder Stones?

Bladder StonesThe signs and symptoms vary and depend on the size and location of stones. Stones that irritate the bladder wall or block the flow of urine can cause symptoms.

Many stones may not cause any symptoms for a long time before their presence is recognized.

Often the symptoms are mild and occasional which contributes to delayed diagnosis when the stones are large or numerous.

Common symptoms of bladder stones include the following

  • Frequent urination, urinary urgency are common in patients with stones but also in patients who have other causes of frequent urination such as UTI, enlarged prostate in men and overactive bladder.
  • Pain: Lower abdominal pain is one of the most prominent symptoms of bladder stones. The intensity of pain can vary from mild discomfort to more pronounced pelvic pain. Symptoms can be associated with painful urination.
  • UTI: men with bladder stones can develop UTI as well as fever, chills, rigors and penile discomfort caused by UTI and urinary obstruction from a stone
  • Urinary complaints. Men and women with bladder stones often experience frequent urination, difficulty in starting the urinary stream and   ‘start-and-stop’ urination.
  • Urine Discoloration: The urine may appear bloody or abnormally dark.
  • Blood in urine: blood in urine often without any other symptoms can occur in patients with bladder stones. Sometimes pain can occur during urination as well as urinary burning caused by a urinary infection.
