Common Urinary Problems in Men

Weak urine stream and frequent urination are some of the most common urinary problems in men.  Pain during urination and burning in the urethra or the penis occur frequently in men with bladder or prostate infection.

Males can frequently experience a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying as a result of prostate swelling from infection or age-related enlargement of the prostate (BPH).

Frequent UTI and bladder stones can also affect men.

OAB or overactive bladder disease such as an urge to urinate, frequent urination can occur in men

Frequent UTI most commonly occur in men with incomplete bladder emptying. Post-void dribbling of urine can occur in men due to enlargement or swelling of prostate.

Stress urinary incontinence is not common in men and most often occurs after prostate surgery for treatment of prostate cancer.

Urinary retention in men is usually caused by an enlarged prostate is more common in men over age 60. Retention of urine in younger men is often a result of trauma or urethral stricture.

After surgery, men often experience urinary problems such as incomplete bladder emptying, slow urine stream, and urinary retention.

What are the Causes of Urinary Problems in Men?

There are many causes of urinary problems in men.  Anxiety and stress can lead to symptoms of overactive bladder. High caffeine intake or drinking a lot of fluids can also lead to frequent urination.

  • The growth of prostate that occurs in most men around age 50 can cause a variety of urinary symptoms including slow urination, incomplete bladder emptying, urinary urgency, bladder stones and UTI.
  • Medical problems such as diabetic neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, and neurogenic bladder can cause urinary problems in men.
  • UTI and prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) are also common causes of problems in men.
  • Ureteral stones can cause lower abdominal discomfort, pelvic pain and urge to pee the stone is close to the bladder.
  • Prostate cancer and bladder cancer can also cause urinary symptoms in men.

Treatment Options for Urinary Problems in Men

Treatment of urinary problems in male patients depends on the underlying cause of problem.  In men with UTI or bacterial prostatitis, antibiotic treatment is usually effective.  In patients with enlarged prostate, medications such as Flomax and finasteride are often used.  Office procedures for treatment for enlarged prostate such as Rezum procedure and Urolift are effective in treating slow urine stream, and incomplete bladder emptying.  Holmium laser ablation of prostate and Greenlight laser, as well as laser prostate enucleation, are very effective surgical treatments for men with incomplete bladder emptying or urinary retention

Medications for Treatment of Urinary Problems in Men

Commonly used medications for treatment of urinary problems in men include alpha-blockers which are used for the treatment of enlarged prostate.  Examples of alpha-blocker medications are Flomax, Uroxatral, and Rapaflo.  Proscar and Avodart are also useful for symptoms of enlarged prostate.

For adult men with UTI or sexually transmitted diseases antibiotics such as Bactrim, azithromycin, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, and nitrofurantoin are commonly used.

For male patients with burning in the urethra, Pyridium often relieves the discomfort.

Medications for overactive bladder such as Vesicare, Myrbetriq, Toviaz, and Detrol are commonly used for symptoms of urinary urgency and urge incontinence when there is no evidence of urinary retention or incomplete bladder emptying.
