What is Urge Urinary Incontinence (UUI)?<\/h2>\n

Urinary urge incontinence refers to urinary incontinence (involuntary leakage of urine) that occurs suddenly with a feeling that one needs to run to the bathroom to urinate but cannot make it in time to the bathroom.  Loss of bladder control caused by the urgency to pee is a prominent characteristic of urge urinary incontinence<\/p>\n

\"Urinary<\/a>Who Gets Urge Urinary Incontinence?<\/h2>\n

Urge urinary incontinence occurs in men and women.  In men, urge urinary incontinence usually occurs later in life typically in men 50-80 years old.<\/p>\n

In women, urge urinary incontinence typically occurs earlier in life, often in the early 30s.<\/p>\n

Men and women with neurological problems such as multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain, or spinal cord injury are at greater risk of urge urinary incontinence.<\/p>\n

What are the Causes of UUI?<\/h2>\n

Urge urinary incontinence is caused by an abnormal heightened sensation of the bladder and unprovoked attempts for the bladder to empty.<\/p>\n

What are the Treatment Options for UUI?<\/h2>\n

Behavioral therapy (bladder retraining) is often used in combination with other therapies.  Medications such as Detrol are often helpful. Depending on the cause of the problem, treatment of the underlying cause often leads to significant improvement in symptoms.  Botox injections in the bladder are very effective for most patients.  Neuromodulation with UrgentPC or Interstim can benefit many patients for whom medications do not work.<\/p>\n
